Poisoning alcohol

Dangerous - young people can be at serious risk of alcohol poisoning and accidents whilst under the influence. [Pg.103]

During the initial evaluation, providing for the safety of the patient is of paramount importance. The severity of intoxication and potential for withdrawal must be quickly and accurately determined. Extreme alcohol intoxication can be fatal either by the production of cardiac arrhythmias, aspiration (the inhalation of stomach contents that are vomited), or other causes. We have all seen reports of college students dying from alcohol poisoning. Likewise, up to 10% of patients in severe alcohol withdrawal can die without treatment. Fortunately, most patients do not experience the most severe forms of alcohol withdrawal such as the DTs. Mild withdrawal can be managed in the outpatient setting with appropriate support and patient adherence, but severe withdrawal requires an inpatient hospitalization. See Section 6.5 for further discussion of the initial evaluation. [Pg.197]

Example A young person died under suspicious circumstances with suspected alcohol poisoning and there was uncertainty over the validity of the blood specimen, prompting quantitative measurement of alcohol in urine. [Pg.32]

In a review of 31 fatalities attributed solely to isopropyl alcohol poisoning, postmortem blood concentrations ranged from 100 to 2500 pg/ml (mean 1400) for isopropyl alcohol and 400 to 3000 pg/ml (mean 1700) for acetone (C. B. Alexander a/., J.forens. Sci., 1982, 27, 541-548). [Pg.691]

Loss of consciousness occurs at blood concentrations around 300 mg/100 ml death at about 400 mg/100 ml. But the usual cause of death in acute alcohol poisoning is inhalation of vomit. [Pg.180]

Acute alcohol poisoning is a sufficiently familiar condition not to require detailed description. It is notorious that the characteristic behaviour changes, excitement, mental confusion (including blackouts ), incoordination and even coma, can be due to numerous other conditions and diagnosis can be extremely difficult if a sick or injured patient happens to have taken alcohol as well. Alcohol can cause severe hypoglycaemia (see above). Measurement of blood alcohol may clarify the situation. [Pg.183]
