Alcohol misuse

Depression occurring as part of bipolar disorder may be severe and accompanied by ideas of guilt and hopelessness, an inability to function at work because of poor concentration and psychomotor retardation or agitation, poor judgement and suicidal ideation. The lifelong risk of suicide in people with this condition is as high as 15%. Factors associated with suicide risk include alcohol misuse, marital separation or divorce, living alone and unemployment, and these are all common secondary consequences of the illness. [Pg.70]

The strongest traditions of inpatient detoxification relate mainly to alcohol misuse, in which the withdrawal syndrome is inherently more dangerous than that from opiates, and the avoidance of withdrawal complications in standard treatment may be the prime consideration in selecting admission. (In drug misuse, as we shall see in subsequent chapters, indications for admission increasingly relate to new developments, such as rapid... [Pg.8]

A number of tasks can be identified which community teams hold in common whether their clients are the mentally handicapped, drug or alcohol misusers. Not every team would necessarily see every task identified as part of their role, and the emphasis laid on particular tasks will vary from team to team and sometimes within a team itself. It has already been noted that as teams develop the nature of their roles may also change. [Pg.177]

Alcohol is chiefly important in medicine because of the consequences of its misuse/abuse. Alcohol misuse is a social problem with pharmacological aspects, which latter are discussed here. HPLC measurement of CDT is routinely used in hospital and research laboratories as a way to detect chronic alcohol misuse. The first HPLC method for the quantification of iron-saturated tiansferrin glycoforms was introduced in 1993,and was based on anion-exchange chromatographic separation of the different glycoforms by salt gradient elution followed by photometric detection. Since then, several variations of the original method have been published ,44 8 number of commercial HPLC assays for CDT have been introduced. ... [Pg.91]

The CDG-I pattern resembles that observed after chronic alcohol consumption, albeit the relative increases were much higher in CDG-Ia (Figure 6.4). However, because CDG testing is typically performed at young age, there is usually no risk of false-positive results due to alcohol misuse. Furthermore, the CDG patterns are clearly distinguishable from those observed with the most common genetic transferrin variants, which may cause falsely high or low values with the minicolumn immunoassays for CDT. [Pg.95]
