Air Service

A more rare form of driver is the steam cylinder. Most arrangements combine the steam driver and compressor on the same frame with the steam cylinder opposite the compressor cylinder. Each cylinder s connecting rod is connected to a common throw on the crankshaft. A flywheel is used to provide inertia. For air service, the units are built as single- and two-stage units, with other combinations available for process service. [Pg.53]

Power requirements and discharge temperatures are calculated using the same relationships as used with the other rotary compressors already discussed. The efficiency is. 80 for air service and pressure in the 30 psig range. The mechanical losses are higher than the other rotaries. The mechanical loss is variable and dependent on gas, lubrication, and other factors. For an estimate, use. 15 of the gas horsepower. This approxuna tion should be close enough for an estimate. [Pg.128]

Because most axial compressors are in air service, most are equipped with labyrinth type end seals. There are no interstage seals in the machines with unshrouded stator blades. The balance piston seal, a labyrinth type, is the only internal seal. There is no reason that axials cannot use some of the other seals as described in Chapter 5, such as the controlled leakage or the mechanical contact type, if the gas being handled by the compressor needs a more positive seal. If there is any prob-... [Pg.252]

Screw compressors are rotary positive displacement machines. Two helical rotors are rotated by a senes of timing gears as shown in Figure 10-8 so that gas trapped in the space between them is transported from the suction to the discharge piping. In low-pressure air service, non-lubri-cated screw compressors can deliver a clean, oil-free air. In hydrocarbon service most screw compressors require that liquid be injected to help provide a seal. After-coolers and separators are required to separate the seal oil and recirculate it to suction. [Pg.266]

Safety Valve this is an automatic pressure-relieving detice actuated by the static pressure upstream of the valve and characterized by rapid full opening or pop action upon opening [1,10], but does not reseat. It is used for steam or air service (Figure 7-2). Rated capacity is reached at 3%, 10% or 20% overpressure, depending upon applicable code. [Pg.400]

Fans (or blowers) of large volumes for industrial applications are usually applied to air service, and essentially all manufacturer s performance data/charts/tables are so referenced to standard air however, they can be readily adapted to chemical/petrochemical process applications in which relatively large volumes of clean gas mixtures are processed at low pressures. ... [Pg.530]

The Lewis bomb was developed in late 1941 by Lieutenant Jock Lewis, one of the early members of Britain s elite Special Air Services (SAS) unit. The need for such an explosive arose because SAS airfield raids were succeeding in blowing up the fuel tanks of German aircraft but failing to ignite the petrol in them. These raids were difficult and risky, and the SAS troops were satisfied with nothing less than total destruction of the aircraft. [Pg.76]

Operating speeds of larger units are as high as 277 rpm with piston speeds for air service up to 4.3 m/sec. The larger compressors with provision for multiple services reduce the number of motors or drivers and minimize the accessory equipment, resulting in lower maintenance cost. [Pg.183]

I had gone into the air service did pretty well, though somehow I was never sure either of myself or of my machine. My squadron commander used to tell me that I should never make a great airman. [Pg.9]

In point of fact, the FLQ was itself funded by Bronfman family networks as an extension of earlier efforts to assassinate French President de Gaulle (the story will be told below). The Bronfmans FLQ option was the North American version of the British Special Air Service s control over both the Provisional Wing of the Irish Republican Army and the British Army s counterterror efforts. [Pg.287]
