I) When working with larger quantities of material, it is more convenient (and a better yield is obtained) to purify the air-dried product by distillation under diminished pressure. Use the apparatus pictured in Fig. II, 19, 4, and add a few fragments of porous porcelain to the solid. No air inlet can be employed to prevent bumping since this may lead to explosive decomposition. Collect the pure m-nitrophenol at I60-I65°/I2 mm. always allow the flask to cool before admitting air otherwise the residue may decompose with explosive violence. The recovery is over 90 per cent, of the pure m-nitroplienol. [Pg.615]

Most gas-fired, heavy-duty gas turbines installed as of 1996 operate at gas pressures between 1.2 and 1.7 MPa (180—250 psig). However, aero derivative gas turbines and newer heavy-duty units can have such high air-inlet compression ratios as to require booster compressors to raise gas inlet pressures, in some cases as high as 5.2 MPa (750 psig). [Pg.17]

For most cooling towers in the United Kingdom, the exit air is saturated at a temperature close to the mean water temperature in the tower. Hence, if the water temperatures and the air inlet conditions are known, AH, AT, and AT can all be calculated, and Tcan be deterrnined. Natural-draft cooling towers are extremely sensitive to air-inlet conditions owing to the effects on draft. It can rapidly be estabUshed from these approximate equations that as the air-inlet temperature approaches the water-inlet temperature, the allowable heat load decreases rapidly. For this reason, natural-draft towers are unsuitable in many regions of the United States. Figure 10 shows the effect of air-inlet temperature on the allowable heat load of a natural-draft tower for some arbitrary numerical values and inlet rh of 50%. The trend is typical. [Pg.105]

Most of the commercial gas—air premixed burners are basically laminar-dow Bunsen burners and operate at atmospheric pressure. This means that the primary air is induced from the atmosphere by the fuel dow with which it mixes in the burner passage leading to the burner ports, where the mixture is ignited and the dame stabilized. The induced air dow is determined by the fuel dow through momentum exchange and by the position of a shutter or throtde at the air inlet. Hence, the air dow is a function of the fuel velocity as it issues from the orifice or nozzle, or of the fuel supply pressure at the orifice. With a fixed fuel dow rate, the equivalence ratio is adjusted by the shutter, and the resulting induced air dow also determines the total mixture dow rate. [Pg.524]

Hot corrosion is a rapid form of attack that is generally associated with alkali metal contaminants, such as sodium and potassium, reacting with sulfur in the fuel to form molten sulfates. The presence of only a few parts per million (ppm) of such contaminants in the fuel, or equivalent in the air, is sufficient to cause this corrosion. Sodium can be introduced in a number of ways, such as salt water in liquid fuel, through the turbine air inlet at sites near salt water or other contaminated areas, or as contaminants in water/steam injections. Besides the alkali metals such as sodium and potassium, other chemical elements can influence or cause corrosion on bucketing. Notable in this connection are vanadium, primarily found in crude and residual oils. [Pg.418]

Water wash. This method is used to remove deposits. Distilled water is sprayed into the air inlet at a speeified rate and engine speed. This speed is normally at a redueed rpm so that the water will not flash into steam in the eompressor and therefore beeome ineffeetive on the latter stages or diffuser. [Pg.751]

If the air inlet is subjeeted to saltwater eontamination, the rotor and stator blades should be eheeked for pitting. Severe pitting near the blade roots may lead to struetural failures. The manufaeturer should be informed of severe pitting. [Pg.754]
