Liquid fuel is injected through a pressure-atomizing or an air-blast nozzle. This spray is sheared by air streams into laminae and droplets that vaporize and bum. Because the atomization process is so important for subsequent mixing and burning, fuel-injector design is as critical as fuel properties. Figure 5 is a schematic of the processes occurring in a typical combustor.

The events are so fine-tuned and the size of chamber, pressure of gas, travel, distance of the moving contact and the size of blast nozzle so designed and adjusted that a near-slrike-free interruption can be achieved for low reactive currents (inductive or capacitive) as well as fullload and very heavy fault currents. The advance compression of gas through the movement of main contact plays an important role by storing a part of the gas even before opening of the arcing contacts.

This should be carried out using a finer abrasive, lower pressure and a faster movement across the surface with the blast nozzle further from the work than for blast cleaning steel. Where sufficient air is available at the correct uniform pressure, the larger sized nozzles are preferred to smaller ones for more area coverage.

B4C is thus used for wear-resistant parts and inserts for mortars and ball mills, wear plates, sand blasting nozzles, dressing tools for grinding wheels, lightweight armor plates for helicopters, tanks, and in composites of glass fiber-reinforced plastics as bullet-proof protection for personnel.

It is often difficult to assess and compare the industrial importance of refractory carbides and nitrides. In some cases, the analysis is relatively straightforward. A case in point would be a silicon-nitride blast nozzle. The cost of producing such a part can be exactly determined and its advantages over a metal unit in terms of wear resistance and useful life accurately plotted.
