Air filter test Any test to determine filter efficiency, flow rates, or other characteristics by some preset method. [Pg.1410]

In addition to glass beads, various other forms of test particles are used in the counting test. Glass beads are mainly used in the size range 10 to 25 pm, while liner particles are available as sand (down to 0.25 pm) and iron oxide (down to 0.5 pm). The Standards, Measurements and Testing Programme of the European Commission launched a few years ago a project dealing with the development and, ultimately, the production of air filters realistically exposed to welding dust occurring during stainless steel welding (Christensen et al. 1999). As a general rule, we don t recommend air filters because the air they produce is never as pure as outdoor air, even in the city. If for some reason you can t ventilate a room, or you ve tested and find that, despite your best efforts, pollutants remain, here are some things to consider First of all, what do you need to filter, and how much money are you willing to spend to get the job done There are two types of pollutants, particulates (which include dust, mold, pollen, soot, smoke, and dander) and gases (VOCs from paint, plastics, and solvents). Air purifiers can t do much for gaseous pollutants, but they will get rid of particulates, which cause asthma and allergies. [Pg.121]
