Aging memory and

Cholinergic mechanisms have long been studied with respect to memory and learning. An interesting study demonstrated that the age-related decline in memory observed in laboratory rodents can be reversed by administration of choline [62-49-7] (13). [Pg.428]

Human newborns of mothers who smoke cannabis during pregnancy experience mild withdrawal symptoms and some autonomic disruption upon childbirth (Fried 1995a, 1995b). Although behavioral consequences are not apparent until 3 years of age, decrements in languange comprehension, sustained attention, memory, and behavior are related to in utero cannabis exposure. [Pg.437]

Huntington s disease, an autosomal dominant disorder, has a mean age-of-onset of 43-48 years. Symptoms appear gradually and worsen over a period of about 15 years until death occurs. Mood disturbance, impaired memory, and hyperrefiexia are often the first signs, followed by abnormal gait, chorea (loss of motor control), dystonia, dementia, and dysphagia. Cases of juvenile onset (<10 years old) are more severe and most frequently occur when the defective allele is inherited paternaily. About 25% of cases have late onset, slower progression, and milder symptoms. [Pg.48]

Adverse effects of the TCAs on the brain include confusion, impaired memory and cognition and occasionally delirium some of these effects have been reported to occur in up to 30% of patients over the age of 50. These effects may occasionally be confused with a recurrence of the s)nnptoms of depression and are probably due to the central antimuscarinic activity of these drugs. Tremor also occurs frequently, particularly in the elderly, and may be controlled by the concurrent administration of propranolol. Neuroleptics are normally not recommended to be used in combination with TCAs as they are liable to accentuate the side effects of the latter drugs. The risk of seizures, and the switch from depression to mania in bipolar patients, has also been reported following TCA administration. [Pg.185]

AD, as a defined medical condition, has only existed for about 100 years, but the loss of memory and cognitive decline as a feature of old age has been documented throughout human history. Ancient writings describe the symptoms but also suggest remedies, based usually on plant extracts, some of which have shown to have relevant activities in recent research and have yielded active compounds of interest. [Pg.390]

Alzheimer s disease, the most prevalent form of dementia, afflicts approximately 10% of the population over age 65. The cardinal features of Alzheimer s disease are progressive loss of memory and disordered cognitive function. Alterations in behavior and a decline in Ian-... [Pg.370]
