Smart systems involve sensing changing conditions and activating some sort of response, usually with an actuator. A project known as Active Aeroelastic Wing (AAW), conducted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory, and Boeing Company, studied wing elasticity in a modi-... [Pg.126]

Wind tunnel test methods were developed to determine wind induced stresses in cooling towers using aeroelastic models as part of a detailed model of a power station site. The turbulence and shear in the atmospheric wind are simulated. Tests on a model of Ferrybridge C Power Station show that resonant stresses are significant at the design wind speed. These increase as the fourth power of wind speed and can be greatly enhanced by turbulent wakes of upstream structures. 6 refs, cited. [Pg.287]

The paper outlines a general procedure for estimating the wind dynamic stresses in hyperbolic cooling towers on the basis of a statistical dynamic approach. Using wind tunnel measurements of pressure fluctuations and assuming that resonance is negligible, predicted wind stresses agreed with measured stresses on an aeroelastic model. The procedure is applied to 451-ft tower. 9 refs, cited. [Pg.294]

Aeroelastically tailored airframes, remote-piloted to pull 15-18g turns, giving a 55 per cent evasion rate versus enemy surface-air installations. So Razum would eventually lose all his fighters in the skies over Omsk. [Pg.196]

Raupach and Thom [522] explained this fact by shading some EPR elements by another ones ( shelter effect ). However, the mechanism of this effect has not been clarified is it a result of the vorticity behind obstacles, or of the extreme turbulence level, or of the basic difference between the natural forest canopy and laboratory models A possible consequence of aeroelasticity of canopy elements was also listed, [522], All these mean that the purposeful experiments should still be carried out as well as the mathematical models should be developed that account for a particular behavior of EPR elements (like the freedom of droplets to be drifted by the flow). [Pg.171]

Subcritical Hopf bifurcations occur in the dynamics of nerve cells (Rinzel and Ermentrout 1989), in aeroelastic flutter and other vibrations of airplane wings (Dowell and Ilgamova 1988, Thompson and Stewart 1986), and in instabilities of fluid flows (Drazin and Reid 1981). [Pg.252]

Aeroelastic and vibration control technology allows flight vehicles to operate beyond the traditional flutter boundaries, improves ride qualities, and minimizes vibration fatigue damage. Conventional active flutter and vibration control technology relies on the use of aerodynamic control surfaces operated by servo-hydraulic actuators. In this conventional configuration, the... [Pg.19]
