Magnesium sulfate is used widely in several industries including fertilizer, cement, textile, chemicals, and medicine. In the cement industry, it is used in manufacturing oxysulfate cement. In medicine, it is an analgesic and cathartic. An important apphcation of anhydrous magnesium sulfate in the laboratory involves drying organic solvents required for syntheses and GC analysis. 

Magnesium sulfate undergoes three important types of reactions in aqueous solutions double decomposition, double salt formation, and formation of oxysulfate cements. Many insoluble magnesium salts may be precipitated out by double decomposition reactions ... 

Oxychloride and oxysulfate cements are another class of acid-base cements. These are formed by reaction of a metal oxide such as that of magnesium oxide with a chloride or sulfate of a metal in the presence of water. Magnesium and zinc based oxychloride cements have been developed fully.

Magnesium oxyacetate binder may be produced by combining calcined magnesia with magnesium acetate [Mg(CH3.COO)2] (Harmuth et al., 1998). The setting characteristics of the binder are similar to those of the magnesium oxysulfate cement. The binder develops considerable strength. The nature of the reaction products has not yet been studied. 

Other fast-setting cements not mentioned so far include alkali-activated slag cement (see section 8.5), alkali-activated fly ash binder (see section 9.1), geopolymeric cement (see section 15.7.1), zinc phosphate cement (see section 12.4), magnesium oxychloride and oxysulfate cement (see section 15.1), and alkali silicate binder(see section 15.3). 

Magnesium oxysulfate cement pastes can be produced through reaction of MgO and an aqueous solution of MgS04 7H20.t Alternatively magnesium chloride solutions can be added to calciiun sulfates or calcium phosphate-sulfate mixtures. The presence of phosphates enhances the water resistance of this cement system. 

Magnesium oxysulfate cement systems have many similar characteristics to those of magnesium oxychloride cement systems. They are, however, less sensitive to elevated temperatures, hence more suitable to some industrial processes incompatible with the use of magnesium oxychloride cement.
