When minimum movement capability is required, the arch is sometimes filled with soft rubber using a suitable adhesive. The maximum amount of movement (axial extension and compression, lateral deflection and angular rotation) that an expansion joint is capable of absorbing is called the rated movement. This rating depends on various factors, such as the size of the expansion joints, the thickness of the tube, arch or convolution, and the type and properties of rubber compound and fabric used in construction. Rated movements are established by manufacturers of expansion joints theoretically, or are based on actual load deflection curves of each size of joint. Rubber expansion joints are generally subjected to hydraulic and vacuum tests at 1.5 times the operating pressure. No internationally accepted standard technical specification for rubber expansion bellows is available, since they are mostly custom built to specific operational requirements. The Expansion Joint Manufacturers Association in New York has laid down standards for rubber expansion joints, which are called EJMA standards [2]. [Pg.78]

Cure kinetics of thermosets are usually deterrnined by dsc (63,64). However, for phenohc resins, the information is limited to the early stages of the cure because of the volatiles associated with the process. For pressurized dsc ceUs, the upper limit on temperature is ca 170°C. Differential scanning calorimetry is also used to measure the kinetics and reaction enthalpies of hquid resins in coatings, adhesives, laminations, and foam. Software packages that interpret dsc scans in terms of the cure kinetics are supphed by instmment manufacturers. [Pg.301]

Current usage is almost entirely associated with the good adhesion to aluminium. Specific applications include the bonding of aluminium foil to plastics films, as the adhesive layer between aluminium foil and polyethylene in multilayer extrusion-laminated non-lead toothpaste tubes and in coated aluminium foil pouches. Poly(vinyl acetate) is too soft and shows excessive cold flow for use in moulded plastics. This is no doubt associated with the fact that the glass transition temperature of 28°C is little above the usual ambient temperatures and in fact in many places at various times the glass temperature may be the lower. It has a density of 1.19 g/cm and a refractive index of 1.47. Commercial polymers are atactic and, since they do not crystallise, transparent (if free from emulsifier). They are successfully used in emulsion paints, as adhesives for textiles, paper and wood, as a sizing material and as a permanent starch . The major disadvantage associated with urea-formaldehyde adhesives as compared with the other thermosetting wood adhesives, such as phenol-formaldehyde and polymeric diisocyanates, is their lack of resistance to moist conditions, especially in combination with heat. These conditions lead to a reversal of the bond-forming reactions and the release of formaldehyde, so these resins are usually used for the manufacture of products intended for interior use only. However, even when used for interior purposes, the slow release of formaldehyde (a suspected carcinogen) from products bonded with urea-formaldehyde adhesives is observed. [Pg.760]

Industrially, silicone surfactants are used in a variety of processes including foam, textile, concrete and thermoplastic production, and applications include use as foam stabilisers, defoamers, emulsifiers, dispersants, wetters, adhesives, lubricants and release agents [1]. The ability of silicone surfactants to also function in organic media creates a unique niche for their use, such as in polyurethane foam manufacture and as additives to paints and oil-based formulations, whilst the ability to lower surface tension in aqueous solutions provides useful superwetting properties. Uses Xylene occurs in the manufacture of different petroleum products and as an impurity in benzene and toluene. It is a colorless and flammable liquid. Commercial xylene is a mixture of three isomers, namely, ortho-, meta-, and paraisomer. It is extensively used in industries associated with paints, rubber, inks, resins, adhesives, paper coating, solvents, and emulsifiers.
