Below-grade walls may be constructed of poured concrete, masonry blocks, or other materials such as all-weather wood or stone. This chapter discusses details for use of poured concrete and masonry foundation because these are the materials most commonly used for new construction. Recently, trade associations such as American Plywood Association (APA) and the National Forest Products Association (NFoPA) have issued publications on designing radon resistance permanent wood foundations. In the April, 1975, issue of Plywood Panel magazine, we find reported square feet, quarter inch basis, domestic hardwood plywood manufactured in this country was approximately 3.5 billion and softwood plywood was 27.5 billion. These adhesives performed equally well when used for bonding of oriented strandboards made from Douglas-fir flakes. In addition, composites made from oak or southern pine flakeboards to which southern pine veener was bonded on the face and back passed the 6-cycle durability test of the American Plywood Association when the core was bonded with the peanut hull-based adhesives, even when the 0.64-cm cores were pressed for only 75 seconds. Chen s work on these adhesives is described further in a series of four U.S. Patents (41-44). 

The American Plywood Association (APA) 6-cycle test was used to evaluate the properties and durability of the composite panels. The results of the tests along with other physical properties of core flakeboards are listed in Table 8. In Figure 5, the dependence of board thickness (spring back thickness) immediately after hot pressing on the press time is shown separately for each of the two wood species and resins.

Construction Adhesives. Unfortunately the commercially available adhesives labelled construction range in quality from poor to excellent. One way to be assured that the construction adhesive is of acceptable quality is to look for the hallmark on the label that the product is certified to comply with the American Plywood Association s specification AFG-01, a very rigid test. 

An estimated 75 % of the mastic products sold in North America indicate compH-ance to stringent AFG-01 (i.e. Adhesives for Field Gluing ) requirements. ASTM D 3498 is quite similar to the AFG-01 standard originally written by the American Plywood Association. These methods define a series of six test specifications (Fig. 8-28), five of which involve shearing plywood to lumber wood block specimens in compression mode after various carefully controlled material conditioning and specimen curing protocols (Fig. 8-29).
