The chemical industry manufactures a large number of antioxidants (qv) as well as uv stabilizers and their mixtures with other additives used to facilitate resin processing. These companies include American Cyanamid, BASE, Ciba—Geigy, Eastman Chemical, Elf Atochem, Enichem, General Electric, Hoechst—Celanese, Sandoz, and Uniroyal, among others. The combined market for these products in the United States exceeded 900 million in 1994 and will reach 1 billion in the year 2000. [Pg.380]

Methyl methacrylate is often used in combination with styrene to improve light transmission and uv stabiUty in fiame-retardant glazing appHcations. Phosphate ester (triethyl phosphate) additives are also included to supplement fiame-retardant efficiency benzophenone uv stabilizers are required to prevent yellowing of these uv-sensitive resins. [Pg.317]

Rubber. The mbber industry consumes finely ground metallic selenium and Selenac (selenium diethyl dithiocarbamate, R. T. Vanderbilt). Both are used with natural mbber and styrene—butadiene mbber (SBR) to increase the rate of vulcanization and improve the aging and mechanical properties of sulfudess and low sulfur stocks. Selenac is also used as an accelerator in butyl mbber and as an activator for other types of accelerators, eg, thiazoles (see Rubber chemicals). Selenium compounds are useflil as antioxidants (qv), uv stabilizers, (qv), bonding agents, carbon black activators, and polymerization additives. Selenac improves the adhesion of polyester fibers to mbber. [Pg.337]

Additives are used extensively in compounding this resin. Antioxidants (qv), uv stabilizers, especially carbon black (qv), and fillers (qv) such as glass fibers, sihca, or clay provide properties desirable for various purposes. [Pg.327]

A multidimensional system using capillary SEC-GC-MS was used for the rapid identification of various polymer additives, including antioxidants, plasticizers, lubricants, flame retardants, waxes and UV stabilizers (12). This technique could be used for additives having broad functionalities and wide volatility ranges. The determination of the additives in polymers was carried out without performing any extensive manual sample pretreatment. In the first step, microcolumn SEC excludes the polymer matrix from the smaller-molecular-size additives. There is a minimal introduction of the polymer into the capillary GC column. Optimization of the pore sizes of the SEC packings was used to enhance the resolution between the polymer and its additives, and smaller pore sizes could be used to exclude more of the polymer... [Pg.307]

The photodegradation of synthetic polymers can be considerably reduced upon addition of ultraviolet stabilizers. The UV stabilizers (preferably derivatives of o-hydroxy-benzophenone or of 2-(2 -hydroxys -methylphenyl)benzotriazole (Tinuvin) transform the absorbed light energy into thermal energy thus preventing all sorts of photochemically initiated reactions. For review articles see the papers of Otter-stedt (.l), Heller and Blattmann ( 2, 2), Kloepffer (jl, j ), Gysling (JS) and Trozzolo (19 ) ... [Pg.1]

Ten mil Lexarf PC film containing no UV-stabil izers was obtained from Sheet Products Section, Mt. Vernon, Indiana. Reference films containing various additives were prepared by dissolving the additive and Lexan PC resin in dichloromethane and casting films from solutions containing about 5% solids. [Pg.99]

The styrenic thermoplastic elastomers are the only type which are fully compounded in the manner of conventional elastomers. In this case, however, the addition of carbon black, or other fillers, does not give reinforcement. Additions of polystyrene, or high impact polystyrene, and oil are used to vary hardness and tear strength, and fillers can be used to cheapen the material. Other added polymers, e g., EVA, can be used to increase ozone resistance. These materials also require antioxidants for protection during processing and service life, and the poor UV stability restricts their use in outdoor applications. [Pg.119]

In order for maleimide/vinyl ether photoinitiator free photopolymerization to be useful, it is important that the cured films have good thermal/UV stability. Since there are no small molecule photoinitiators added to the uncured mixture initially, there is no residual small molecule photo initiator present in the final crosslinked film. This accounts for the enhanced UV stability we have observed for cured maleimide/vinyl ether films. In addition, TGA thermograms of photocured films of the MPBM/CHVE mixture (Figure 8) exhibit excellent thermal stability, with decomposition occurring at higher temperatures than for a simple UV cured HDDA film with 3 weight percent DMAP photoinitiator. (Such thermal stability would be... [Pg.145]

Again, polyesters based on naphthalene-2,6-dicarboxylic acid can meet the desired properties, plus have other additional advantages. Food components containing double bonds or conjugated double bonds are extremely sensitive to light-induced reactions, such as photo-oxidation. The addition of UV stabilizers is therefore necessary to protect the content of PET bottles against UV irradiation. PET, in contrast to PEN, does not show intrinsic UV protection properties. [Pg.480]

Additives such as special fillers (carbon blacks, for example), UV stabilizers and so on can enhance the basic resistance of the matrix to UV. [Pg.166]

The Other additives in the compound can also influence weathering as we can see in Table 3.14, which displays the effect of colorants in combination with UV stabilization. Ageing behaviour depends on the nature of the colorant and the UV-filtering action of the filler. Black compound is by far the best choice. [Pg.208]

Note Additives used for specific purposes are termed UV stabilizers, photostabilizers, thermal stabilizers, etc. [Pg.255]

UV stabilizer Additive that retards degradation caused by UV radiation, vulcanization Cross-linking with heat and sulfur. [Pg.495]

Light. Ultraviolet (uv) light promotes free-radical oxidation at the mbber surface which produces discoloration and a brittle film of oxidized mbber (35). This skin cracks in random directions to form a pattern called crazing, which can be prevented by the addition of carbon black fillers or uv stabilizers. Black stocks are more resistant to uv light than are gum or light-colored stocks. Nonblack compounds require larger quantities of nonstaining antioxidants which should bloom to the surface as the surface uv stabilizers deplete. [Pg.246]

Additives. Compounds are often added to the polymer at the extruder or melt homogenizer. Common additives are antioxidants, thermal stabilizers, slip agents, antiblock agents, and uv stabilizers. [Pg.1141]

UV stabilizers Additives incorporated into a polymer that prevent or slow the degradation of the polymers caused by exposure to light. [Pg.225]
