Phosphorus-containing polymers have shown excellent thermal stability and good adhesion characteristics. In addition, phosphorus-containing polymers have been found to show excellent flame retardance [66,67]. Lecithin, glyceryl esters containing two fatty acid residues and one phosphate ester (usually as phosphatidylcholine), constitute one of the oldest of the commercially important phosphoric acid derivative surfactants. However, since they contain nitrogen and are normally either nonionic or amphoteric, they are not discussed further in this section. Additional phosphorus-containing surfactants include derivatives of phosphonic and phosphinic acids.

Immiscible solvents like water and oil can be transformed by addition of solubilizers to single-phase solutions. Amphiphilic substances are known as effective solubilizers. Solubilization depends on the HLB of the components that ought to form a single phase and on the kind of solubilizer used. Phosphorus-containing surfactants with their variety of possible molecular structures are solubilizers that can be tailored to the task demanded. 

The analysis of phosphates and phosphonates is a considerably complex task due to the great variety of possible molecular structures. Phosphorus-containing anionics are nearly always available as mixtures dependent on the kind of synthesis carried out. For analytical separation the total amount of phosphorus in the molecule has to be ascertained. Thus, the organic and inorganic phosphorus is transformed to orthophosphoric acid by oxidation. The fusion of the substance is performed by the addition of 2 ml of concentrated sulfuric acid to — 100 mg of the substance. The black residue is then oxidized by a mixture of nitric acid and perchloric acid. The resulting orthophosphate can be determined at 8000 K by atom emission spectroscopy. The thermally excited phosphorus atoms emit a characteristic line at a wavelength of 178.23 nm. The extensity of the radiation is used for quantitative determination of the phosphorus content. 

CIDNP studies of the decomposition have centred mainly on thermal decompositions photochemical decomposition has generally been less intensively investigated. While most reports of polarization refer to n.m.r. spectra, a number of papers have described polarization of other nuclei, (Kaptein, 1971b Kaptein et al., 1972), (Lippmaa el al., 1970a, b, 1971 Kaptem, 1971b Kaptein et al., 1972 Kessenikh et al., 1971), and F (Kobrina et al., 1972) contained in the peroxide reactant. Additionally, polarization of P has been reported in the products of decomposition of benzoyl peroxide in phosphorus-containing solvents (Levin et al., 1970). 

This new area of chemistry is still at a very early stage of development with most of the breakthroughs occurring in the last couple of years. The future holds promise for more exciting developments in the use of P=C bonds in polymer science and it is very possible that apphcations may be found for these new types of materials. In addition, an exciting prospect for the future is the further expansion of these methodologies, which are so common for C=C bonds, to other phosphorus-containing multiple bonds and other p-block elements.

Compounds containing carbenium, silyl or phosphonium cations can act as Lewis acids. In addition, phosphorus- and silicon-based hypervalent compounds display a Lewis acid catalytic activity. Furthermore, ionic liquids, organic salts with a melting point below 100 °C, have shown the ability to catalyze a group of reactions either in substoichiometric amount or, if used as the reaction medium, in stoichiometric or even larger quantities.
