Consideration of Complexing

The formation of the donor-acceptor complexes Mt. .. M2 between the monomers M, and M2 is regarded as being an additional important factor responsible for the deviations of some certain systems from the classic copolymerization model. Also it should be noted that besides the single monomer entrance into the polymer chain a possibility of the monomer addition in pairs as a complex also exists. The corresponding kinetic scheme of the propagation reaction parallel with reactions (2.1) involves four additional ones [36]

An evaluation of the fate of trace metals in surface and sub-surface waters requires more detailed consideration of complexation, adsorption, coagulation, oxidation-reduction, and biological interactions. These processes can affect metals, solubility, toxicity, availability, physical transport, and corrosion potential. As a result of a need to describe the complex interactions involved in these situations, various models have been developed to address a number of specific situations. These are called equilibrium or speciation models because the user is provided (model output) with the distribution of various species. 

In complexation reactions the solvent is normally present in large excess so that its concentration is essentially constant. Thus, in cases where the reactivity of the coordinated solvent is not an issue, it is possible to simplify considerations of complex formation by omitting the solvent from the description of the equilibrium. Crystal structure data on Complex IV developed relatively early - compared with the other complexes of the electron transport chain. Nonetheless, the understanding of mechanism does not rise to the same level, for example, as that of Complex III. The following consideration of Complex IV is less extensive than that for Complex III above, but it continues to argue for the hydrophobic consilient mechanism by means of the apolar-polar repulsive free energy of hydration, AG,p, and it also speculates on possible molecular players for proton egress and ingress. 

We now turn to a consideration of complexes of other biological materials which have on occasion been linked with the topic of charge transfer. We defer a critical discussion of the possible physiological significance of the various complexes to specialists, and consider only the physical aspects of complex formation.
