The ASA (now ANSI) performance code for Safety Glazing Materials was revised in 1966 to incorporate these improvements in windshield constmction. The addition of test no. 26 requiring support of a 2.3-kg ball dropped from 3.7 m defined this level of improvement. It was based on a correlation estabUshed between 10-kg, instmmented, head-form impacts on windshields, on 0.6 x 0.9-m flat laminates, and the standard 0.3 x 0.3-m laminate with the 2.3-kg ball (28). Crash cases involving the two windshield interlayer types were matched for car impact speeds and were compared (29). The improved design produced fewer, less extensive, and less severe facial lacerations than those produced in the pre-1966 models. [Pg.527]

In addition to improving safety during transportation by optimizing the mode, route, physical conditions, and container design, the way the shipment is handled should be examined to see if safety can be improved. For example, one company tested to determine the speed required for the tines of the forklift trucks used at its terminal to penetrate its shipping containers. They installed governors on the forklift trucks to limit the speed below the speed required for penetration. They also specified blunt tine ends for the forklifts. [Pg.95]

They can only carry out these functions consistently and efficiently if the feedwater (FW) and boiler water (BW) chemistry and the overall boiler operation are properly controlled. Thus, over the years, in addition to improvements in engineering design and practice, many different forms of external water treatment processes and internal water treatment programs have been developed. [Pg.3]

Age of facility. Older equipment, particularly equipment subject to frequent thermal or mechanical cycling, may have a higher frequency of failure. Additionally, newer equipment may incorporate improvements designed to reduce the potential for equipment failure. This consideration can be applied not only to individual pieces of equipment but to entire process units. [Pg.107]

Examination of early -n.m.r. spectra of heparin and of chemically modified heparins121 prompted a reinvestigation of N,0-desulfated, carboxyl-reduced heparin, leading to the isolation of substantial amounts of L-iditol pentaacetate.121,122 In addition, improved conditions for the acid hydrolysis of heparin and carboxyl-reduced heparin gave increased recoveries of L-iduronic acid and 1,6-anhydro-L-idose, respectively.123 These findings confirmed the L-enantiomeric designation of the iduronic acid, and established that it is the main uronic acid in heparin. [Pg.69]

The applied research laboratory has developed a new substance that they feel has great potential as a gasoline additive. It improves the antiknock characteristics of gasoline, and does not noticeably increase the amount of air pollution. The marketing department estimates that within 5 years the market could reach 10,000,000 lb / yr. The process engineer is asked to design a plant to produce 10,000,000 lb / yr (4,500,000 kg / yr). [Pg.11]

Oil-field chemistry has undergone major changes since the publication of earlier books on this subject Enhanced oil recovery research has shifted from processes in which surfactants and polymers are the primary promoters of increased oil production to processes in which surfactants are additives to improve the incremental oil recovery provided by steam and miscible gas injection fluids. Improved and more cost-effective cross-linked polymer systems have resulted from a better understanding of chemical cross-links in polysaccharides and of the rheological behavior of cross-linked fluids. The thrust of completion and hydraulic fracturing chemical research has shifted somewhat from systems designed for ever deeper, hotter formations to chemicals, particularly polymers, that exhibit improved cost effectiveness at more moderate reservoir conditions. [Pg.8]

Miscellaneous design features are additional safety design methods that are usually included in the early design phases of new projects and are often the basis for safety improvements in existing plants. [Pg.291]

The design and construction of sample collection and field test kits is a planning activity, since these kits must be ready to go at a moment s notice in response to a possible contamination threat. In addition to improving the efficacy of the site characterization and sampling activities, advance preparation of sample collection and field test kits offers several advantages ... [Pg.111]

Erlotinib (Tarceva) took a differenf approach to a pivotal trial. In the study of Tarceva for patients with advanced, previously treated non-small cell lung cancer, where survival was the primary endpoint, patients were randomized to receive either Tarceva or placebo. Tarceva clearly prolonged overall survival (6.7 vs. 4-7 months, p = 0.001). In addition, Tarceva improved progression-free survival, and improved fime-fo-deferiora-tion of patients reported symptoms (cough, dyspnea, and pain). Obviously, this was a definitive trial (drug vs. placebo) however, it could be a controversial trial as it was a survival trial with no provisions to crossover to the active Tarceva. It is doubtful fhaf many trials with this noncrossover design (with a survival endpoint) will be done in the future. [Pg.452]

In an improved design, called an MCFC network, reactant streams are ducted such that they are fed and recycled among multiple MCFC stacks in series. Figure 9-19b illustrates how the reactant streams in a fuel cell network flow in series from stack to stack. By networking fuel cell stacks, increased efficiency, improved thermal balance, and higher total reactant utilizations can be achieved. Networking also allows reactant streams to be conditioned at different stages of utilization. Between stacks, heat can be removed, streams can be mixed, and additional streams can be injected. [Pg.266]

In addition to designing experiments to avoid the above complications, caution should be exercised in the work up of the data. The procedure we recommend for evaluating spectrophotometric data has been reported (26, 27). An improved method for selecting the best K i was subsequently reported (20). Adaptation of these equations to calorimetric (20) and magnetic resonance (23) experiments have also been reported. For the spectrophotometric experiment in which there is an overlap of the absorption band of the acid and the adduct it forms, the equation has the form ... [Pg.85]

Two additional experimental designs were carried out to optimize the formulation and granulation process (water addition time, granulating time, and addition of binder—dry versus in-solution— binder level, disintegrant level, and lubricant level). There was a trend toward improved compaction profiles and reduced friability with increased granulation time. It was also observed that the lubricant and disintegrant levels affected the friability of the tablets. The effect of the lubricant level on tablet friability is shown in Figure 20. The final formulation and process are summarized in Table 5. [Pg.394]

Overall, milk thistle may be effective in improving survival and liver function in a variety of conditions, but additional well-designed clinical trials are needed to confirm these findings. [Pg.1543]
