Cardiovascular Effects. Inhalation and oral studies in humans and animals have not revealed any treatment-related histopathological lesions of heart tissue, or impairment of cardiac functions, even at dose levels causing severe liver and kidney damage (Adams et al. 1952 Stewart et al. 1961 Umiker and Pearce 1953). It is possible that high-level carbon tetrachloride exposure may produce cardiac arrhythmias by sensitization of the heart to catecholamines (Reinhardt et al. 1971). Accordingly, there is some concern for cardiovascular toxicity following substantial exposure to carbon tetrachloride. [Pg.77]

Ibuprofen is a well-known drug that possesses analgesic (pain-relieving) and antipyretic (fever-reducing) properties. It is particularly known for its use in pain relief from arthritis. Ibuprofen was discovered by Dr. Stewart Adams and his colleagues in the United Kingdom in the 1950s, patented in 1961, and first made available in 1969. It became available in the United States in 1974. Ibuprofen tablets are sold under the trade names Advil and Motrin. The chemical name of ibuprofen is 2-(4-isobutylphenyl)propanoic acid. [Pg.213]

The first report of enantioselective catalysis over metal catalysts was made in 1939 by Lipkin and Stewart who showed that hydrocinchonine / -methylcinnamate could be hydrogenated in ethanol over an Adams Pt catalyst to yield / -phenylbutyric acid which exhibited an optical rotation of 8%.89 Some 20 years later, Akabori and co-workers reported that Pd supported on silk-fibroin was enantioselective for compounds containing both C=N and C=C functionalities, yielding optical yields as high as 66%, although the origin of the enantioselectivity in these systems has never been clear.90 A further 20 years later, Orito and co-workers reported... [Pg.342]

Stewart Adams and John Nicholson at the Boots Company in Nottingham took acetylsalicylic acid as a lead template and looked for related anti-inflammatory structures, which would be devoid of the ASA-related side-effect. In 1955, they discovered that their anti-inflammatory compounds reduced skinreddening (erythema) in guinea-pigs, caused by ultraviolet irradiation. Thereby they had foimd a simple and feasible assay system to test a whole host of compounds. In 1961, out of a group of several hundred substances they were able to select the one, which was introduced to the British market in 1969 under the name ofibuprofen (Fig. 5.83). [180]... [Pg.323]

The dream of Stewart Adams, to find not only a palliative treatment but also a cure for rheumatoid diseases, did unfortunately not come true. [180] Pro-inflammatory cytokines like interleukin-1 and -6, or the tumour-necrosis factor-a (TNF-a) play key roles in diseases of the rheumatoid spectrum, and impact a multitude of signalling cascades within the immune system. Accumulating insight into the pathophysiology, biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology of these illnesses has clearly improved the opportunities for their treatment at the... [Pg.334]

Actually, Stewart and Morrow have observed interferences in liquid fatty acids and paraffins (see later, p. 191), which point to the existence of bundles. The fundamental researches of Adam and Langmuir showed some time ago that film formation of fatty acids on water surfaces is due to the fact that the carboxyl groups cleave to the surface of the water while the lipoid hydrocarbon chains, in consequence of their strong molecular cohesion, form a relatively stable surface film which, itself, has a very low surface tension on account of the small secondary valence effect of the end methyl groups. If we calculate the surface tension of such a film in absolute energy units from molecular cohesion, we obtain values between 10 and 50 dynes/cm, which agree satisfactorily in order of magnitude with values determined experimentally. [Pg.144]
