In a search for more effective approaches to the problem of stereoselective dioxygenation, alternative methods have been developed. While the inclusion of alkenes and O2 within a chiral cyclodextrin cavity furnished hydroperoxides with modest ee values, neighboring stereocenters and chiral auxiliaries could induce highly stereoselective dioxygenation. One of the more successful conversions has been the selective oxidation of propylene to acrolein. In 1948, Hearne and Adams (7) reported that cuprous oxide produced acrolein from propylene with a yield of about 50% at propylene/oxygen ratios of about one. Even though the yield of acrolein was low, the search for improved catalytic systems provided few catalysts until the development of catalysts based on bismuth and molybdenum. 

H]uridine is generally used as a precursor specific for RNA but this is only partially true as significant amounts of radioactivity may enter DNA particularly in the form of cytosine (Adams, 1968 Oldham, 1967). Many of the problems encountered with the use of [3H]thymidine also arise in the use of [3H]uridine but very little has been done in the search for a rigorous solution.
