As mentioned previously (and discussed in detail in Sec. IX), contact lens products have specific guidelines that focus on compatibility with the contact lens and biocompatibility with the cornea and conjunctiva [75], These solutions are viewed as new medical devices and require testing with the contact lenses with which they are to be used. Tests include a 21-day ocular study in rabbits and employ the appropriate types of contact lenses with which they are to be used and may include the other solutions that might be used with the lens. Additional tests to evaluate cytotoxicity potential, acute toxicity, sensitization potential (allergenicity), and risks specific to the preparation are also required [75-77], These tests are sufficient to meet requirements in the majority of countries, though testing requirements for Japan are currently much more extensive. [Pg.427]

Most of the concern for the toxicity of the atmospheres associated with fires has focused on vapors and gases. Vapors and gases are the components that are known to cause acute toxicity, and at high concentrations can lead to incapacitation and death. It is clear, however, that the smokes from fires also have particulate components in the form of soot and chemical reaction products, such as metallic oxides or ozonolysis products. The acute and/or chronic nature of the toxicity of a chemical should be part of any decision-making process about its use or subsequent release. The focus cannot be solely on reduction of acute hazards, which tends to be easily achievable. The majority of cases in which chemicals have been released into the environment, only to cause serious ecological impacts over large spatial scales, were usually identified after many years, and at chronic low-dose exposures, with low acute toxicity to nontarget organisms. A further OECD Council Decision in 1991 focused on HPV chemicals. These decisions prompted the development of a minimum hazard data set to describe an HPV chemical - the Screening Information Data Set, or SIDS. This includes physicochemical properties (melting point, boiling point, vapor pressure, water solubility, and octanol-water partition coefficient) environmental fate (stability in water, photodegradation, biodegradation, and an estimate of distribution/transport in the environment) environmental effects (acute toxicity to aquatic vertebrates, invertebrates, and plants) and human health effects (acute toxicity, repeated-dose toxicity, toxicity to the gene and the chromosome, and reproductive and developmental toxicity). [Pg.1337]
