Acute gastritis

Dietary factors such as coffee, tea, cola, beer, and a highly-spiced diet may cause dyspepsia, but they have not been shown to independently increase PUD risk. Although caffeine increases gastric acid secretion and alcohol ingestion causes acute gastritis, there is inconclusive evidence to confirm that either of these substances are independent risk factors for peptic ulcers. [Pg.271]

Many other organs are also sensitive to alcohol abuse. The stomach may develop chronic or acute gastritis, and ulcers are prevented from healing. Pancreatitis... [Pg.139]

As would be expected, khat overuse produces symptoms similar to those of other monoamine stimulants, such as cocaine or amphetamine, including signs of sympathetic overarousal. In the extreme this can involve a toxic psychosis. Disorders more frequently associated with chronic khat use in males are headaches, anorexia, insomnia, constipation, and respiratory illnesses (Kennedy et al. 1983). Females report higher incidences of acute gastritis, jaundice, bronchitis and hepatic diseases. Also, cathinone has toxic reproductive effects in humans and experimental animals (Islam et al. 1990). It decreases sperm count and motility, and increases the number of abnormal sperm cells. It also decreases plasma testosterone in rats. [Pg.143]

Huo Xiang is an excellent herb to expel wind, cold and dampness it can also transform dampness in the Middle-Jiao. Compared with Xiang Ru, it is stronger in transforming dampness in the Middle-Jiao compared with Zi Su Ye, it not only expels wind and cold, but also disperses dampness in the superficial regions of the body to treat heaviness and stiffness of body. It is selected especially in the summer to treat the common cold, influenza and acute gastritis. [Pg.41]

Antimicrobial base materials formulated with metal and amine salts of anacardic acid, said to be non-irritative, have been proposed for cosmetic use [270]. It is of interest that anacardic acid and 2(E)-hexenal isolated from the cashew apple to which the pendant kernel (the external seed) is attached have been found to exhibit antibacterial activity against the Gram-negative bacterium, Helicobacter pylori, which is considered to cause acute gastritis [271]. The same compounds also inhibit the enzyme urease. [Pg.153]

Traditional use This species has been used for centuries. Avicenna used the leaves as a hemostatic, to heal wounds, tumors, eye inflammation, chronic skin ulcers, and elephantitis as well as for liver and kidney diseases. In more recent times the plant has been used to treat lung tuberculosis, pertussis, stomach catarrh with low acidity, acute gastritis, enterocolitis, stomach and duodenum ulcers, and as a hemostatic (Khahnatov et al. 1984). A tea made from the dried leaves is used to treat coughing, diarrhea, dysentery (with tea from seeds is most effective), inflammation of the bladder, and malaria, and as an expectorant (Altimishev 1991). [Pg.192]

Important antimicrobial effects were observed for eashew eom-pounds. Anacardic acids and (E)-2-hexenal characterized from the cashew Anacardium occidentale L. (Anacardiaceae) apple have been found to exhibit antibacterial activity against Helicobacter pylori, a gram-negative bacterium considered to cause acute gastritis (Kubo et al. 1999). It was also observed that the antibacterial activity of methicil-lin against methicilin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains can be enhanced when combined with certain anacardic acids (Kubo et al. 2003 Muroi and Kubo 1996). [Pg.530]

In early infection, acid secretion decreases, and at least two acid-inhibitory substances have been purified from H. pylori, with one partially sequenced. It appears to represent a metabolic gene. There is inevitably an acute gastritis observed in animal models, with ingress of a variety of inflammatory cells into the submucosa. The reason for the gastritis is obscure, but it is found after infection by any strain of H. pylori. It seems possible that NH3 production is the explanation, because all strains that are infective produce large quantities of NH3 that would tend to alkalinize the interior of gastric epithelial cells. [Pg.482]

ACUTE GASTRITIS. This type of gastritis, which is experienced by most people, is probably the most common stomach ailment. It arises from a variety of causes, many of which can be summarized in one word—overindulgence. [Pg.502]

CHRONIC GASTRITIS. This is a mild gastritis which recurs over weeks or months. It is difficult to diagnose, but chronic gastritis is more serious than acute gastritis, as it can signal other more pressing disorders. [Pg.502]

Acute gastritis may be subdivided on the basis of the endoscopic appearance into mild and advanced gastritis. The former exhibits a generalised oedema, moderately swollen folds, limited mucosal bleedings, and small erosions. The stomach wall is less pliable with reduced distension. The same, but more... [Pg.39]
