Ivabradine is used in the treatment of angina in patients in normal sinus rhythm. It acts on the sinus node resulting in a reduction of the heart rate. It is contraindicated in severe bradycardia (heart rate lower than 60 beats/ minute), cardiogenic shock, acute myocardial infarction, moderate-to-severe heart failure, immediately after a cerebrovascular accident, second and third-degree heart block and patients with unstable angina or a pacemaker. Side-effects include bradycardia, first-degree heart block, ventricular extrasystoles, headache, dizziness and visual disturbances, including blurred vision. [Pg.119]

Alves OL, Gomes O. Cocaine-related acute subdural hematoma an emergent cause of cerebrovascular accident. Acta Neurochir (Wien) 2000 142(7) 819-21. [Pg.530]

Cocaine is a central nervous system stimulant that inhibits the peripheral reuptake of catecholamines, leading to increased sympathomimetic activity [129]. Its abuse is associated with a variety of medical problems. These include acute myocardial infarction, cardiac arrhythmias, cerebrovascular accidents, hyperpyrexia and stimulated sympathetic activity, seizures and coma, obstetrical comphcations, intestinal ischemia and a variety of psychiatric complications [128-131]. A number of reports in the mid to late 1980 s described patients who developed rhabdomyolysis while using cocaine [132-134]. Some of these patients experienced acute kidney injury [135-139]. While the exact incidence of acute kidney injury secondary to cocaine rhabdomyolysis is unknown, in one reported series it occurred... [Pg.605]

Figure 13-21 MRI of the brain of a 36-year-old patient with a single episode of acute weakness. A. T,-weighted axial image without contrast agent taken 3 days later. B. Ti-weighted image after intravenous injection of gadopentetate dimeglumine, which has concentrated in the left frontal lobe (arrow). The patient was diagnosed as having a cerebrovascular accident. Henderson-Hasselbalch equation, Chapter 1). It may result from central depression of respiration (e.g., narcotic or barbiturate overdose, trauma, infection, cerebrovascular accident) or from pulmonary disease (e.g., asthma, obstructive lung disease, infection). Increased [H+] is in part buffered by cellular uptake of H+ with corresponding loss of intracellular K" ". In acute hypercapnia, the primary compensatory mechanism is tissue buffering. In chronic hypercapnia, the kidneys respond to elevated plasma Pcoj increasing the amount of HCO formed by carbonic an-hydrase in the tubules and by excreting more H+. [Pg.936]

Indications Warm and hot diseases, hot evils internally sinking into the pericardium, phlegm heat gathering and blocking the portals of the heart. Total or partial loss of consciousness due to acute encephalitis, acute meningitis, acute hepatitis, pneumonia, dysentery, uremia, hepatic coma, cerebrovascular accident, infantile convulsions, and schizophrenia... [Pg.126]

Severe hypoglycemia in the elderly can present as an acute neurological emergency that may mimic a cerebrovascular accident. Thns, it is important to check the plasma... [Pg.302]

Finally, high intraluminal shear forces develop in these thinning or eroded areas of the plaque s fibrous cap, inducing macrophages to secrete additional metalloproteinases that further degrade the arterial-fibrous cap matrix. This contributes further to plaque rupture and thrombus formation (see Fig. 34.22). The consequence is a macrovascular ischemic event such as an acute myocardial infarction (AMI) or an acnte cerebrovascular accident (CVA). [Pg.642]

Five patients (aged 23 to 58) treated for germ cell tumours died from unexpected acute life-threatening vascular events (myocardial infarction, rectal infarction, cerebrovascular accident) after treatment with VBP (vinblastine, bleomycin, cisplatin). A survey of the literature by the authors of this paper revealed 14 other cases of both acute and long-term cardiovascular problems (myocardial infarction, coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular accident) in patients given VBP. ... [Pg.670]

At less than 2% in the clinical investigations acute renal failure, atrial fibrillation, cerebrovascular accident, sepsis, meningitis, psychotic disorder, suicidal ideation, respiratory distress, rhabdomyolysis, electrocardiogram abnormal, stupor, loss of consciousness, incoherent, clonic convulsion and grand mal convulsion. Rare instances of fatal pneumonia aspiration and suicide attempt were reported (<1%). [Pg.417]
