Active sensitization

The direct photoelectrolysis of water requires that the v level be below the 02/H20 level and the ec level be above the H+/H2 level. This condition is satisfied, e.g. for CdS, GaP, and several large-band gap semiconductors, such as SrTi03, KTa03, Nb205 and Zr02 (cf. also Fig. 5.59). From the practical points of view, these materials show, however, other specific problems, e.g. low electrocatalytic activity, sensitivity to photocorrosion (CdS, GaP), and inconvenient absorption spectrum (oxides). [Pg.414]

An intriguing logical extension of such work is the construction of a supramolecular host modified with a chiral sensitizer for executing enantiodifferentiating photosensitization. Inoue and coworkers reported a novel supramolecular photochirogenic system, in which an optically active sensitizer immobilized in zeolite supercages sensitizes the enantiodifferentiating photoisomerization of an excess amount of substrate dissolved in bulk solution [90]. [Pg.355]

Detailed theoretical work has shown that alkane C-H activation by the 3Pi excited state Hg proceeds by initial formation of a weak [Hg (alkane)] exciplex, followed by C-H cleavage via a mechanism described as a mixture of oxidative addition and H atom abstraction. While alkanes react exclusively via C-H bond activation, sensitization of monosubstituted arenes ArCH2 -X (Ar = aryl X = H, alkyl, OR, NR2) occurs with substantial C-X bond cleavage (equation 25). [Pg.2605]

Although copper-based catalysts have long been known to have good WGS activities, sensitivity of those catalysts to poisons that were present in the coal-derived gas precluded them from being employed industrially. It is only due to a massive change from coal gasification to hydrocarbon steam reforming which produces much purer synthesis gas, that copper-based catalysts entered the scene of WGS processes. Since... [Pg.3208]
