Activators. Activators are often added to removers to make them more efficient. Acids such as phenol [108-95-2] phosphoric acid [7664-38-2] acetic acid [64-19-7] formic acid [64-18-6]., and citric acid [5949-29-1] are used to increase the cutting abiHty on epoxide-type paints and other modem finishes. Strongly alkaline activators are effective on enamel andlatex paints. Other activators include ammonia [7664-41-7] monoethyl amine [75-04-7], and /V-phenyIdiethan ol amines. Acid and base activators shorten the shelf life of some removers. [Pg.550]

The effectiveness of landfills aeration has been tested in various countries around the world both in Europe (Germany, Austria, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland), North America (USA) and Asia (Japan, Malaysia) for more than 20 years. Different technical solutions, which vary primarily in the method of oxygen supply to the landfill, have been used. The selection of a relevant solution depends mainly on the final intention of its application, landfill construction, available financial resources, and legislation. In Europe, aeration is usually applied as a method for an acceleration of old landfill stabilization, commenced when the landfill gas production becomes insufficient for profitable energy recovery. Such an activity shortens the period of the residual gas production. This gas is usually released to the atmosphere because of problems with its combustion. The accelerated stabilization of waste, by a few-week aeration, is also used as the initial phase preeeding of landfill mining. Although blood pressure control follows Ohm s law and seems to be simple, it underlies a complex circuit of interrelated systems. Hence, numerous physiologic systems that have pleiotropic effects and interact in complex fashion have been found to modulate blood pressure. Because of their number and complexity it is beyond the scope of the current account to cover all mechanisms and feedback circuits involved in blood pressure control. Rather, an overview of the clinically most relevant ones is presented. These systems include the heart, the blood vessels, the extracellular volume, the kidneys, the nervous system, a variety of humoral factors, and molecular events at the cellular level. They are intertwined to maintain adequate tissue perfusion and nutrition. Normal blood pressure control can be related to cardiac output and the total peripheral resistance. The stroke volume and the heart rate determine cardiac output. Each cycle of cardiac contraction propels a bolus of about 70 ml blood into the systemic arterial system. As one example of the interaction of these multiple systems, the stroke volume is dependent in part on intravascular volume regulated by the kidneys as well as on myocardial contractility. The latter is, in turn, a complex function involving sympathetic and parasympathetic control of heart rate intrinsic activity of the cardiac conduction system complex membrane transport and cellular events requiring influx of calcium, which lead to myocardial fibre shortening and relaxation and affects the humoral substances (e.g., catecholamines) in stimulation heart rate and myocardial fibre tension. [Pg.273]

Polk et al. reported27 that PET fibers could be hydrolyzed with 5% aqueous sodium hydroxide at 80°C in the presence of trioctylmethylammonium bromide in 60 min to obtain terephthalic acid in 93% yield. The results of catalytic depolymerization of PET without agitation are listed in Table 10.1. The results of catalytic depolymerization of PET with agitation are listed in Table 10.2. As expected, agitation shortened the time required for 100% conversion. Results (Table 10.1) for the quaternary salts with a halide counterion were promising. Phenyltrimethylammonium chloride (PTMAC) was chosen to ascertain whether steric effects would hinder catalytic activity. Bulky alkyl groups of the quaternary ammonium compounds were expected to hinder close approach of the catalyst to the somewhat hidden carbonyl groups of the fiber structure. The results indicate that steric hindrance is not a problem for PET hydrolysis under this set of conditions since the depolymerization results were substantially lower for PTMAC than for die more sterically hindered quaternary salts. [Pg.547]
