The replacement of part of the catalyst packs by base metals is reported to have led to unexpected reductions in metal loss rate. The Engelhard system is said to cut losses by 25% while the Degussa mixed gauze is claimed to reduce losses by 40—50%. Gillespie and Kenson attribute this improvement to moderation of local hot spots. Interestingly in this connection a recent Patent to Degussa claims that when more than half the Pt in 10% Rh/Pt is replaced by Pd there is no loss of activity for ammonia oxidation, but the [Pg.120]

Pan has shown that the aging of an HCN catalyst is accompanied by a build-up of surface carbon and iron. If more than 35 p.p.m. of iron was present in his Pt/Rh gauze the catalyst could not be fully activated. On the other hand, burning off surface carbon increased the catalyst activity. [Pg.121]

The balance of evidence suggests that the catalyst in ammonia oxidation has a clean surface free from S and C and that aging is a consequence of the formation of gaseous Pt02. The situation for the catalyst used in the Andrussow process is less clear. Despite much lower oxygen pressures and consequent surface contamination by C and S species, the surface restructures due, perhaps, to surface energy differences aging is linked to build-up of carbonaceous films and the presence of iron impurities. [Pg.121]

Selectivity in the oxidation of ammonia seems to be determined by the competition of NH3 and oxygen for a single type of active site, but the factors governing selectivity in the co-oxidation of ammonia and methane are obscure. The kinetics of HCN formation and of by-product formation should be examined under molecular beam conditions and over a wide temperature range so as to identify the important kinetic pathways. [Pg.122]

The model was fitted to the first FCC unit using corrections for the frequency factors. The modified frequency factors that were used are Klo = 1.57Fi0, K2o = 0.5K2O, K3o = 1.5Ks0. We note that in practice these correction factors vary from one catalyst to the other, depending upon the type of catalyst, its activity and age, as well as the type of feedstock used. [Pg.453]

To insure that the correction factors are not just empirical numbers that fit only one specific FCC unit at one set of operating conditions, the model should be cross-verified. For this, the same model with these correction factors is used to simulate the second FCC unit. This unit uses a very similar catalyst with almost the same activity and age and a very similar feedstock. Success of the second simulation acts as a cross-verification here and ensures that the corrected model gives a reasonably good general representation of FCC type IV units. However, in practice the catalyst activity should be regularly checked to ensure that the preexponential factors used in the simulation model are still valid. [Pg.453]

These zeohtes are synthesized by chemical processes, which result in a more uniform and purer state as compared to the natural types in terms of their lattice stmctures, sizes of pores and cages in their frameworks. The principal raw materials useM for synthesis of synthetic zeolites can be pure chemicals rich in silica and alumina, minerals available on the earth or hy-products of industries. Fly ash being an abundantly and cheaply available industrial by-product, rich in minerals containing sihca and alumina can be an alternative material for synthesis of synthetic zeolites [20, 34—39]. The type of zeolites formed is a function of the temperature, pressure, concentration of the reagent solutions, pH, process of activation and ageing period, Si02 and AI2O3 contents of the raw materials [1, 8]. More recently, studies of wine and beer have initiated techniques of statistically vaUd sensory analysis. Scientific studies involving wine continue in these areas, building on past discoveries. Natural phenols as desirable dietary components and monitors of storage and aging reactions are currently active fields. Viticultural research, as well as enological, continues to improve grapes and the wines made from them (11). [Pg.366]

Rubber. The mbber industry consumes finely ground metallic selenium and Selenac (selenium diethyl dithiocarbamate, R. T. Vanderbilt). Both are used with natural mbber and styrene—butadiene mbber (SBR) to increase the rate of vulcanization and improve the aging and mechanical properties of sulfudess and low sulfur stocks. Selenac is also used as an accelerator in butyl mbber and as an activator for other types of accelerators, eg, thiazoles (see Rubber chemicals). Selenium compounds are useflil as antioxidants (qv), uv stabilizers, (qv), bonding agents, carbon black activators, and polymerization additives. Selenac improves the adhesion of polyester fibers to mbber. [Pg.337]

Physiographic development of the surface of the earth refers to the landforms and shapes of the landscape. These surface features are subject to continuous change from constructive (e.g., uplift, volcanic activity, and deposition of sediments) and destructive (e.g., erosion) processes. Landform modifications are continuous and sequential. These modifications establish a predictable continuity that can be helpful in determining certain aspects of relative geologic ages. [Pg.242]

In other instances, reaction kinetic data provide an insight into the rate-controlling steps but not the reaction mechanism see, for example, Hougen and Watson s analysis of the kinetics of the hydrogenation of mixed isooctenes (16). Analysis of kinetic data can, however, yield a convenient analytical insight into the relative catalyst activities, and the effects of such factors as catalyst age, temperature, and feed-gas impurities on the catalyst. [Pg.22]

Skin lighteners, freckle and age spot removers, and other remedies for hyperpigmentation are not actually bleaches like the products listed so far. The active ingredient is hydroquinone, which inhibits melanin formation when applied to the skin. Since the effect is easily reversed by exposure to sunlight or ultraviolet light, a sunscreen is usually included in the formula. [Pg.194]
