Digestion is usually performed in a solution at specified conditions of pH, temperature, and buffer (see T able 1) and in a denaturing environment to ensure complete endpoint digestion. Polynuclear aromatics in the effluent were determined by hexane extraction and ultraviolet absorption of the concentrated extract. Benzene and the other low boiling organics were analyzed by vapor phase (Nz) partitioning and gas chromatography, Suspended solids which are not shown in this data were in the 100-200 mg/1 range. A cartridge filter will reduce the solids to the 50 mg/1 usually specified by producers of activated carbon very easily.
