When solvent welding or thermal welding is not practical or desired, adhesive systems can be used. Adhesive types such as epoxies, urethanes, thermosetting acrylics, nitrile phe-nolics, and cyanoacrylates permit ABS to be bonded to itself and to other substrates. The best adhesives have shown strength greater than that of ABS however, these adhesives provide very rigid bonds.

The phenomenon of PV was described for the first time by Kober in 1917 (Kober, 1919). The real breakthrough of this membrane process started in the 1980s with the development of a series of industrial appUcations and the use of poly(vinyl alcohol)-poly(acryl nitrile) (PVA-PAN) composite membranes for the dehydration of alcohol/water azeotropic mixtures (Thsel and Bruschke, 1985). The other main PV commerdal application was developed by Membrane Technology Research (MTR) and is based on the removal of VOCs from contaminated water (Cox and Baker, 1998).

OUgomere. Bei der kathodisch angeregten Polymerisation von Acryl-nitril nimmt mit steigender Wasserkonzentration sowohl die Menge, wie auch das Molekulargewicht des Polyacrylnitrils (PAN) ab. Die Farbe des PAN wechselt von gelb zu orange (3S, 34) (siehe Kap. 3.3.1.7). 

Eine weitere Moglichkeit zur Synthese trimerer und tetramerer Acryl-nitrile hat man in der Hydrodimerisierung von a-Methylenglutarsaure-nitril. Dabei erhalt man das Produkt II. Elektrolysiert man ein Gemisch von a-Methylenglutarsaurenitril und AN, so erhalt man neben dem Tetrameren II noch das Trimere I, sowie Adiponitril (26). 

The spotting tack and/or the heat resistance of elastomeric polyurethane adhesives may he extended by adding resins (alkyl phenolic, epoxide, terpene phenolic, coumarone) or polymers (low crystallizing polyurethane, acrylic, nitrile ruhher, chlorinated ruhher, acetyl cellulose) (Penczek and Nachtkamp 1987) with low miscihility with the polyurethane. To improve adhesion together with heat resistance, reactive alkyl phenolic resins, chlorinated rubber, or other chlorine-containing polymers can be added.
