We are grateful to the University of Toronto and Trent University for providing facilities, to the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and the consortium of chemical companies that support the Canadian Environmental Modelling Centre for funding of the second edition. It is a pleasure to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of Eva Webster and Ness Mackay. 

Finally, we continue to acknowledge our families, who provided patience, understanding, and encouragement throughout the writing of the first and second editions.

In acknowledgment of his allegiance, the new government, which expelled most Spaniards from Mexico in 1828, made an exception in the case of del Rio. Nevertheless, he preferred to share the fate of his fellow-countrymen and therefore spent four years of voluntary exile in Philadelphia. In the preface to the second edition of his Elements of Oryctog-nosy, published in Philadelphia in 1832 at the expense of the Mining Tribunal of Mexico, he wrote ... 

Besides acknowledging the critical review on various chapters by many distinguished scholars in the Lelds of pharmaceuticals and related sciences who were mentioned in the preface of the Lrst edition, I would like to appreciate the following experts who have provided me with considerable amounts of helpful discussion and valuable input on the new chapters in the second edition Parviz Mojaveria, PhD, FCP, Quintiles Inc. Ken Yamamoto, PhD, PLzer Inc. Marcus Brewster, PhD, Johnson Johnson Company and Liang Dong, PhD, Johnson Johnson Company. 

All through the first and second edition, the work of main people who contributed to both the theory and applications of thermodynamics, transport processes, and chemical reactions has been visited and revisited. I acknowledge and greatly appreciate all these people. I am also thankful for the help I received from Dr. Yelizaveta P. Renfro and the production team of Macmillan India Ltd. for editing and reviewing the chapters. 

I wish to acknowledge Jonathan Rose at Wiley for his enthusiastic support for the second edition and all of the staff at Wiley for their production assistance. 

I would like to acknowledge Sally Barhydt and her colleagues at Springer Publishing Company in New York City. I sincerely thank you, Sally, for all your hard work in assisting with the publication of the second edition, and for your ongoing commitment to me as an author. 

To meet these demands, almost every section has been completely rewritten. Some authors from the second edition have retired and acknowledged experts have revised the topics that the retired authors reported on in the past We thank their employers for allowing these authors to contribute to this publication. 

The second edition authors would like to sincerely acknowledge the work of the first edition authors— Robert M. Franz, Robert D. Copeland, Lawrence D. Lewis, and William C. Stagner. Most of the first edition s text is retained. The basic goal in revising the first edition chapter was to add current references. This was easily done with the excellent foundation and framework the first edition authors provided. 

The authors thank the reviewers of individual sections of this second edition, whose insightful comments have strengthened the book Lisa Akeson, Peter Eglinton, Benjamin Levy, and Don McCubbin. The authors also acknowledge Lynn Roberts critique of the entire text of the first edition. Thanks are also due to John MacFarlane, who assisted with the graphics. The authors greatly appreciate the support for this endeavor that was provided to E. Fechner-Levy by Abt Associates Inc., and to H. Hemond by the William E. Leonhard Chair in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at MIT. 

The goals and objectives of this program have been carried out consistently through the dedication and direction of the editorial boards (Table 2), the quality writing of leaders in the field of pharmacotherapeutics, and the input of skilled reviewers. Since the second edition of PSAP, the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties acknowledges its quality by recognizing participation in PSAP as a method of obtaining recertification as a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist.
