Cellulose acetate is an amorphous material with a specific gravity of 1.30. It burns very slowly with a yellow flame, drips, gives off an odor of vinegar, and has black smoke with soot. It is soluble in acetone, furfuryl alcohol, and acetic acid. Cellulose acetate is positively identified by infrared spectroscopy. [Pg.300]

Amyloid.—When treated with concentrated sulphuric acid cellulose dissolves and undergoes hydrolysis. If the solution is diluted with water a gelatinous product is obtained which gives the blue color with iodine characteristic of starch. This product is known as amyloid. When boiled in the dilute acid the amyloid is hydrolyzed and dextrin and finally glucose are obtained. Concentrated hydrofluoric acid and phosphoric acid also dissolve cellulose. With glacial acetic acid in the presence of acetic anhydride and sulphuric acid cellulose yields acetyl derivatives indicating its alcoholic character. In the presence of acetic anhydride, acetic acid, and a little sulfuric acid, cellulose is converted into the triacetate. Among the esters with organic acids, cellulose acetate is the most important one. Specimen surface was polished electrochemically by mixed solution of sulfuric acid and ethyl alcohol (1 3). Using 2.5N-NaOH solution at 303 K, particle-tracks by a-rays produced by thermal neutron with boron were etched for 2.7 ks. Then etched films were washed for 10.8 ks in flowing water.
