Isothiochroman-4-ones 549 have been obtained by the cyclization of S -ary I methyl acetic acids <1996BML2827>. The influence of substituents on the reaction time and temperature was noted with electron-releasing substituents the reaction was complete in ca. 1 h at rt, but with F or Cl substituents the reaction required prolonged reflux. Benzylsulfonylacetic acids are cyclized by P Ojo to the corresponding isothiochroman-4-one 2,2-dioxides 550 (Scheme 231) <2004SC2691>. 

The Baeyer-Villiger reaction occurs with retention of stereochemistry at the migrating center. This stereoselectivity has been utilized in a practical method for the preparation of isotopically chiral methyl acetic acid (5) from [2- H]cyclohexanone (4) prepared by enzyme-catalyzed stereoselective exchange of the pro-R o -proton and enantioconvergent exchange of the o-proton with deuterium (Scheme 2).
