A Path Forward

Operational and timely medical countermeasures are primarily intended to prevent casualties of those exposed to threat agent. Major mission objectives also include preserving combat effectiveness and neutralizing enemy threats. Countermeasures 

The National Cancer Institute oversees a large R D portfolio that further divides research directions. Within the NCI, research is roughly divided into areas of nanodevices and nanomaterials, nanotechnology-enabled therapeutics, diagnosis and biosensors, advanced imaging, and health and safety.

If sufficient researchers follow these recommended directions, a number of these capabilities wiU be demonstrated in the laboratory and investigational new drug appheations wiU be filed over the next 3-5 years. Following this period, businesses would pursue new drug applications.

The safety alert concept is another tool that can be used by large or small businesses to communicate past best practices and indicate a path forward. On a daily basis, lessons learned should be communicated in a site safety meeting. A worker or supervisor may have discovered that a current practice could cause a potentially dangerous situation. Work is ongoing to reduce defects in SiC material. One of the more interesting concepts is the reduction of defects through epitaxial growth on porous SiC substrates [64]. This approach has clearly demonstrated a reduction in intrinsic defects, as evidenced by photoluminescence measurements. It is too early to tell whether this technique can provide a path forward for the bipolar devices but it will clearly find its applicability in several areas where SiC will have a market.
