As with any research activity, following the explosion of interest in surface process dynamics and the realisation that a semi-quantitative understanding of phenomena was possible, the last three or four 

There are a great many interesting chapters in this volume that present the development of the subject from a wide range of perspectives. There is no doubt that the solid foundation that now exists will enable studies of reactions in more heterogeneous or complex environments such as on nanostructures or enzymes to take place and the first of such studies can only be a short way off. 

We acknowledge countless discussions with friends and colleagues in particular those whose work appears in this review. Additionally one of us (GRD) wishes to acknowledge receipt of grant GR/N03891 from the EPSRC. 

Eley-Rideal and hot atom reactions between H atoms on metal and graphite surfaces 

Numerous experimental studies of other ER reactions on metals [45-51], as well as ER reactions on semiconductor [52-63], carbon [64-71], and even liquid [72] surfaces have appeared over the past decade or so. Several theoretical studies have also appeared [53, 61, 71, 73-94]. For example, experimental [52-61] and theoretical [53, 61, 77] studies of the reactions of H or D atoms with D or H-covered Si surfaces clearly demonstrate the existence of both ER and HA processes. In contrast to metals and semiconductors, experimental [70, 71] and theoretical [83-90] studies of the reactions of H atoms with H adsorbed onto graphite have shown that the direct ER cross sections can be large, on the order of 10 A2.

As ever, the Editor and his Advisory Board invite comments, criticism (preferably, but not necessarily, constructive) and proposals from readers and potential writers. Suggestions concerning developments in physical organic chemistry where a forward-looking review might help in the development of a new research area, or of established topics in need of an up to date treatment, should be directed to any of us. 

The series has been extremely fortunate in the quality of the contributors, who have allowed the editors to persuade them to devote much time and effort in order to expound their specialist interests for the benefit of a wider audience. The Editor would welcome feedback from readers. This might merely take the form of criticism. It might also contain suggestions of developing areas of chemistry that merit a forward-looking exposition or of the need for a new appraisal of better established topics that have escaped the notice of the Editor and his distinguished Advisory Board.

The objective of this book is to provide a forward looking overview of the use of protein crystallography in drug discovery. It has been organized so that the early chapters review and describe some mature and emerging topics that would fall under the traditional structure-based desigrf umbrella, the middle chapters provide focused accounts of specific works, and the final chapters delve into new and fertile areas of research. This book does not attempt to be comprehensive thus the final lineup of chapters was a compromise between the interests of the editors and the willingness of the authors to contribute a chapter.

If you are a plug and play person and will hurt yourself if anything is not UL approved, you will not do well in the hydrogen lab. Patience, caution and a level head are very important, to go along with the sense of adventure that comes from the excitement of being involved in a forward looking technology. 

Long winters make for short growing seasons. Fresh produce appears in late August and lasts only about two weeks past the Labor Day weekend. The rest of the year, locals rely on cannery-fresh foods, a term that could only be coined by a forward-looking Alaskan. A few farmers markets do operate in the state, although they are open only during the summer months. 

Highly repetitive peptide sequences, and sequences dominated by only a few amino acids are not easily studied by NMR spectroscopy since assignment of the NMR spectrum is difhcult. A forward-looking aspect of the design process is therefore to vary the amino acid sequence as far as possible to enable one to carry out NMR spectroscopic analyses. 

The AN/KAS-IA provides standoff chemical agent detection capability for surface ships and has also been adapted to fixed-site shore facilities. It is a forward looking infrared (FLIR) based Electro-optic sensor that can remotely detect the presence of some chemical warfare agents. It also provides night vision capability for shipboard security. The standard shipboard installation consists of two AN/KAS-IA s (except for the smallest ships, which have one). Approximately 600 are deployed on surface ships. 

These topics illustrate the need to bring a multidisciplinary approach to problem-driven research. The core research program is closer to what might be called basic research, and it provides a forward-looking approach to dealing with ecological issues, health risks, pollution prevention, and support for environmental economics that eventually will allow us to anticipate new problems at an early stage. The interaction between problem-driven and core research is reciprocal and iterative. 

While these future road map views will vary by adoption rates, they also may vary by other factors. This includes the industry, the design of the supply chain strategy, and the number of supply chains. Using these inputs, leadership teams should project their view of what they believe the rate of change will be for their supply chain. The highest success happens when this road map is cross-functional with a forward-looking duration of at least three years. 

In the late 1980s, AeroVironment, Inc., of Simi Valley, California, developed a small, low-cost, remotely piloted drone for the Marines that could be carried in two backpacks and could be flown with moderate pilot skills. With a 9-foot wingspan, Pointer was the first true mini-UAV system to be commercially produced (Figure 1). Pointer carries a forward-looking color camera and is powered by an electric motor that provides up to 90 minutes of operation with present lithium battery technology. 

Event Tree Analysis. Event tree analysis is a forward-looking method that takes an initiating event, identifies post-initiating event influencing factors, and combines the information into a logic tree in which the occurrence of each influencing factor is either true or false. ...

A surrogate is a substitute, replacement, stand-in, or deputy. The many companies that use near-miss metrics as a surrogate for a leading metric are obviously aware that tracking near-miss trends can produce, as the paper says, a forward looking set of metrics which indicate the performance of the key work processes, operating discipline, or layers of protection that prevent incidents. ...
