Zinc undecenoate

Solid disinfectants (disinfectant powders) usually consist of a disinfectant substance diluted by an inert powder. For example phenolic substances adsorbed onto kieselguhr form the basis of many disinfectant powders, while another widely used powder of respectable antiquity is hypochlorite powder. Disinfectant or antiseptic powders for use in medicine include substances such as acrifiavine, or antifungal compounds such as zinc undecenoate or salicylic acid mixed with talc. 

Both undecenoic acid and zinc undecenoate are used in proprietary athlete s foot preparations. 

Zinc undecenoate has astringent properties, which helps to reduce the irritation and inflammation caused by the infection. 

Zinc is present in a number of pharmaceuticals, the most important of which is life-sustaining insulin. Many topical preparations contain zinc as the oxide, sulfate, or stearate as an astringent or antipruritic. Some foot powders contain the antifungicidal zinc undecenoate, and zinc pyrithione is used in antidandruff shampoos. After dissolving them in acid, the topical products can be easily analyzed by either atomic emission or atomic absorption spectroscopy (49), since they contain a relatively high concentration of zinc. However, atomic absorption is approximately four orders of magnitude more sensitive than atomic emission for the determination of zinc (Table 2) and offers superior precision for the analysis of injectable insulin (50), where zinc concentrations can be as low as 4 ppm (39).

Although the official method is to extract the zinc undecenoate with hot chloroform, which is evaporated and the residue ignited to zinc oxide> quantitative recoveries could not be obtained either by this method or by complexometric titration. 

Ricinoleic acid (Figure 3.8) is the major fatty acid found in castor oil from seeds of the castor oil plant (Ricinus communis Euphorbiaceae), and is the 12-hydroxy derivative of oleic acid. It is formed by direct hydroxylation of oleic acid (usually esterified as part of a phospholipid) by the action of an 02- and NADPH-dependent mixed function oxidase, but this is not of the cytochrome P-450 type. Castor oil has a long history of use as a domestic purgative, but it is now mainly employed as a cream base. Undecenoic acid (A9-undecenoic acid) can be obtained from ricinoleic acid by thermal degradation, and as the zinc salt or in ester form is used in fungistatic preparations. 

Undecenoic acid, the active antifungal entity, is liberated from the zinc salt on contact with moisture on the skin. 

Because the free radical initiated graft reaction can also lead to the cross-linking of polyethylene, copolymers of ethylene and with acrylic acid (184,185), glycidyl methacrylate (184,186), methacrylic acid and 10-undecenoic acid (187-189) were synthesized to compatibilize polyethylene/polyamide blends. The poly (ethylene-co-methacrylic acid) ionomers neutralized by sodium (184) and zinc (45,118,190-192) has also used as compatibilizers. High energy irradiation, used to modify the surface of fibers or films at beginning, was also used to compatibilize the polyethylene/polyamide blends (193-196). 

Zinc 10-undecenoate, the zinc salt of 10-undecenoic acid, is used to treat certain fungal infections, particularly tinea pedis (athlete s foot). Draw a structural formula of this zinc salt.
