Your Essential Oils

If you are concerned about the quality and authenticity of your essential oils, your best guarantee is to buy from a reputable supplier whose integrity you can trust. The only way to differentiate between a conventional oil and an organic one is by the paper trail generated by inspection and validation from farmer to end product with certification by relevant bodies. [Pg.126]

At the instructor s option, determine the proton NMR spectrum of your essential oil. NMR provides a nice confirmation of your sfrucfure. In keeping wifh fhe spirit of green chemistry, deuterated acetone can be used as an alternative solvent to deu-terated chloroform. You can use deuterafed acetone to remove the essential oil from fhe cenfrifuge tube and directly transfer fhe solution fo an NMR tube. Once the NMR has been determined, you can transfer some of fhe NMR sample fo a salf plafe for infrared spectral analysis. Assign the peaks in the spectrum to the structure of your essential oil. [Pg.513]

During the cleanse, it is best to avoid stimulants such as coffee, tea or sedatives such as alcohol. Avoid smoking. A calm emotional body is also best during this time. Do what it takes to be relaxed and avoid violent TV or novels. Spend time resting, contemplating nature or soaking in warm water scented with essential oils. Enjoy the process of purifying your body and mind. [Pg.41]

Choose an all-natural anti-mosquito product, such as the Herbal Insect Repellent from Real Purity (http //realpu rity.com) or a different product that can be easily tolerated, but avoid all chemical creams and spray cans. It is very risky to keep using such products with regard to the possible deterioration of your situation. If you re able to tolerate essential oils, tea tree oil is also a good substance to ward off mosquitoes and other biting insects. It also helps treat the itch and the swelling when you ve already been bitten. Use organic tea tree oil (see entry 297) Avoid cheaper (often synthetic) essential oils, which can cause reactions in those with sensitivities. Do not use a mosquito net that has been treated with an insecticide. [Pg.147]

If you can tolerate essential oils, make a concoction of diluted tea tree, lavender, rosemary, lemon and eucalyptus oil put this concoction (or even just diluted tea tree or eucalyptus oil) in a pump flacon and, during flea season, spray or sprinkle some of it on your dog every day. Always use a pure brand. The cat may not appreciate this treatment (and probably will want to lick it all up), so for this reason it might be better to just regularly use the flea comb. [Pg.158]

The first part of this work is the separation and purification of your Three Essentials. Ideally you would steam distil out the essential oil, then ferment the plant and distil out the alcohol, followed by multiple redistillations to obtain a very pure product. The remaining plant residue is calcined and the salts obtained by leaching. This will give you the Salt of Salt. [Pg.46]

Y ou can use this to your advantage. I have just armed you with some of the most exclusive knowledge in existence regarding essential oils. You ll be talkin like a pro when you lay this shit on the chem company s sales rep. And by all means, be a particular and picky customer. This is your health or your company s bottom line that is at stake. [Pg.156]

And who wants to deal with all the intricacies of import the duties required at the overseas port, the duties required at Customs, the proper paperwork necessary for Customs Although smaller, retail-like companies (esp. those in the essential oils and lab supply) can usually negotiate things from their end and have your stuff swiftly thru Customs, most places cannot. Especially the chemical manufacturers. [Pg.212]

In plants, terpenes are typically found as a component of the essential oils. The name of this fluid suggests an important characteristic of this class of molecules. If humans have found these oils important enough to refer to them as essential, there is a reasonable chance that they have useful properties. Many terpenes such as menthol (shown in Figure 1) and camphor have medicinal values. You may have used a throat lozenge with menthol to help clear your sinuses the last time you had a cold. [Pg.1236]

You can use any number of delicious organic essential oils to fragrance your bath. To help them disperse in the water, mix four to ten drops of your chosen oil with one tablespoon (14 fl oz/15 ml) of milk first the fat in two percent or whole milk acts as a carrier to help distribute the oils evenly around the bath. For the greatest benefit, choose essential oils that match your skin type (right). [Pg.35]

Preparation Blanche the washed and sliced celery roots in the vegetable stock. Choose your favorite cookie cutter, like heart or star, and cut them out of the blanched celery. Whisk the egg and stir in the essential oil variation of your choice. Marinate the celery stars and hearts, then coat them with coconut akes or sesame seeds and fry them until they have a delicious golden brown color. To serve, top them with a small amount of the essential oil seasoning. They are great to accompany salads, baked potatoes with sour cream, and other vegetarian dishes or, if you prefer, beef creations. [Pg.1065]

Preparation Warm up the chocolate couverture until you have a creamy consistency. Stir in your choice of basic essential oils or intermixture. Dive in the fruits, and let them dry. Serve chilled. [Pg.1069]

If the proper equipment is available, your instructor may require you to perform a gas-chromatographic analysis. If preparative gas chromatography is available, you will be asked to isolate the carvone from your oil (Part B). Otherwise, if you are using analytical equipment, you will be able to compare only the retention times and integrals from your oil to those of the other essential oil. [Pg.133]

In Experiment 54A, you will steam-distill the essential oil from a spice. You will choose, or the instructor will assign you, a spice from the following list caraway, cinnamon, cloves, cumin, fennel, or star anise. Each spice produces a relatively pure essential oil. The structures for the major essential oil components of the spices are shown here. Your spice will yield one of these compounds. You are to determine which structure represents the essential oil that was distilled from your spice. [Pg.506]

From the infrared spectrum (and any other data you have used), you should determine the structure (A-E) that best matches the essential oil you isolated from your spice. Label the major peaks in the infrared spectrum and give an argument that supports your choice of structure. Also be sure to include your weight percentage recovery calculation. [Pg.510]

Dissolve your sample of essential oil in methanol. A reasonable concentration can be obtained by dissolving 25 mg of your sample in 10 mL of methanol. To remove all traces of dissolved gases and solid impurities, set up a filtering flask with a Buchner funnel and connect it to a vacuum line. Place a 4-/i,m filter in the Buchner funnel. (Note Be sure to use a piece of filter paper, not one of the colored spacers that are placed between the pieces of filter paper. The spacers are normally blue.) Filter the essential oil solution by vacuum filtration through the 4-/i,m filter and place the filtered sample in a clean 4-dram snap-cap vial. [Pg.511]

Inject the solution onto the column of the GC-MS instrument. As each component in the solution appears on the graph, use the built-in computer library to identify each component. Use the "quality" or "confidence" indicators on the printed lists to determine whether or not the compounds suggested are plausible. In your laboratory report, identify each component in the essential oil by providing its name and structural formula. [Pg.512]

Using the results of your GC-MS analysis, prepare a brief report describing your experimental method and presenting the results of your analysis. In your report, be sure to identify each important component of the essential oil you analyzed, draw its complete structural formula, and indicate the relative percentage of that substance in the essential oil mixture. [Pg.512]

Benzyl acetate is a pleasant-smelling esterfound in the essential oil of jasmine flowers and is used in many perfume formulations. Starting with benzene and using any other reagents of your choice, design an efficient synthesis for benzyl acetate. [Pg.1027]

Before shutting off a mechanical pump, the pump should be vented to atmospheric pressure. Although some mechanical pumps (and essentially all new pumps) have a check valve designed to prevent reverse flow, it is not a good idea to depend on such a valve. If a vacuum is held on the inlet side of a pump with the pump off, the pump oil may be drawn up and into the vacuum line. Therefore, it is best to treat all pumps as if they did not have such a valve. When turning off a mechanical pump, it is best to vent (to the atmosphere) the section of the vacuum line connected to the pump. Your pump should be separated from the rest of the line when venting so that the rest of the line is not exposed to the atmosphere. If... [Pg.350]

From your extraction the oily substance is a combination of Mercury and Sulphur, the ashes from the remaining herb (which is calcined) is the Salt. The Sulphur can be separated from the Mercury by further distillation, but in herbal alchemy this further separation is not as essential as in mineral alchemy. In the forming of the alchemical spagyric medicine or elixir, the oil extract and the final product of the ashes are joined. But for other uses, i.e. oils and incense, the combinations vary along with any points of conjunction necessary in the recipe. All in all, the end result is the same—where Sulphur, Salt and Mercury make up the final product. [Pg.91]

Yet many people—particularly those suffering from depression—are omitting these crucial substances from their diets. So here s my second piece of simple advice If you re feeling depressed, boost your intake of essential fatty acids. You may well need to cut back on the chips and fries. That doesn t mean you re getting enough fatty fish, fish oil, flaxseed oil, olive oil, nuts, and seeds—all of which you need to fight depression. [Pg.54]

Try to get most of your fat from healthy fat sources (olive oil, avocados) and essential fatty acids, such as fish oil, safflower oil, flax seed, borage or evening primrose oil, and nuts. [Pg.59]

You should also add fish-oil supplements to your diet an additional 1000 mg unless you re suffering from acute depression, or if you have an inflammatory-related condition, such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, gum disease, cancer or musculoskeletal injury, and chronic aches and pains, in which case, increase your dose to 2000 to 3000 mg daily. If you ve been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, you can take up to 9000 to 10,000 mg per day. (If you re a vegetarian or just can t bear the thought of fish oil, see the essential fatty... [Pg.71]
