The template will be constructed and fitted out at a fabrication yard and then transported offshore to the drilling location. The template is lowered to the seabed using a crane barge or, if small enough, lowered beneath a semi-submersible rig. Prior to drilling the first well, piles are driven into the sea bed to hold the template in place. [Pg.269]

The results showed that some yards used ultrasonics to examine thousands of checkpoints for quality control purposes whilst others were content to examine the almost the minimum number that would be accepted. It is cleeu from the results that the minimum extent of NDE recommended by Classification Societies falls some way short of that applied for quality control purposes by some shipbuilders. [Pg.1042]

The amendments shown in Table 2 above should not increase the amount of NDE applied in quality conscious yards and in some cases may give a reduction by eliminating the double checking that can sometimes occur. Other yards may find that a more extensive NDE programme will be required. The benefits obtained from an enhanced inspection scheme should be apparent in the improved fatigue life of the ships. [Pg.1043]

The results of the review exercise described above confirmed that all shipyards do not have the same attitude towards quality. Whilst the results presented by most of the yards visited were reasonably consistent at 0.5 - 4.5 % repair rate regardless of NDE method, the results from other yards were less satisfactory. The exercise showed that in some yards repair rates were regularly in excess of 10% and that repair rates for radiography tended to be higher than those for ultrasonics. [Pg.1044]

As stated above the Surveyor s role will include an assessment of the yard s quality control department including the suppliers of any contracted NDE services. The Surveyor will look for the employment of qualified personnel, the availability of adequate inspection procedures and the presentation of definitive NDE reports. [Pg.1044]

If the results obtained from NDE are not used to monitor and regulate the quality of welding then every penny spent by the yard can be wasted. [Pg.1045]

It is possible that much of the inspection in future years will be focused on areas identified from databases which collate corrosion and damage history in similar ships. The validity of any conclusions derived from assessment programmes or databases can only be accepted if the quality of the original product is known. This would suggest that the NDE inspection programmes applied by some yards will have to be expanded. [Pg.1051]

This is going to supply the cold water that courses through the condenser whether that condenser is set up for reflux or is part of a distillation configuration. The pump need not be very strong. In fact, the perfect example is one of those little, submergible fish tank pumps that one can find at any pet store for about 10. All the chemist does is attach a hose to the outlet, chunks the little pump into a bucket of ice water, attaches the hose to the condenser and there it is. An alternative source is that little pump that s attached to the windshield washing fluid reservoir of any car in a junk yard. The chemist removes the reservoir (pump still attached), applies an adapted power source to the pump and uses the plastic reservoir to hold the ice water. [Pg.16]

A new source of safrole that Strike has just stumbled upon is in Strike s back yard. Momma comes home from the local nursery with two plants that have these enormous leaves. They are succulents and grow like crazy. Strike What ya got there Momma Momma Don t think I haven t noticed those filthy drug books you write, you sick little monkey Strike Aw c mon. Mom. Let s not get into this again. Strike doesn t... Momma Well I needed some new ground cover plants, and...sigh...I know you re into this twisted licorice thing...so I bought these weeds that are called Licorice Plants. ... [Pg.32]

The identification of Tris as a potential carcinogen dealt a resounding blow to the flame-retardant finishing industry. From 1977 to 1984, several principal supphers of flame-retardant chemicals either reduced the size of their operations or abandoned the market completely. However, Albright and Wilson Corp. (UK) continues to produce THPC—urea precondensate and market it worldwide, and Westex Corp. (Chicago) continues to apply precondensate—NH finish to millions of yards of goods for various end uses. American Cyanamid reentered the market with a precondensate-type flame retardant based on THPS. [Pg.491]

Nitromethane [75-52-5] is produced in China. Presumably a modified Victor Meyer method is being employed. Nitromethane is transported in dmms or smaller containers. Two tank cars of nitromethane exploded in separate incidents in the 1950s. Both explosions occurred in the switching yard of a railroad station. In both cases, essentially adiabatic vapor compression of the nitromethane—air mixture in the gas space of the tank car resulted in the detonation of the Hquid nitromethane. Other nitroparaffins do not, however, detonate in this manner. [Pg.36]

In addition to the circuit breaker, there have been a number of other SMA appHcations for various functions in electric power generation (qv), distribution, and transmission systems. One such device is a thermal indicator that provides a signal visible from the ground of a hot junction or connector in a distribution yard. Such hot spots occur as a result of the loosening of bus bar connectors owing to cycHc temperature as the electric load varies. In addition to the use of SMA flags as a hot-spot indicators, actuators that automatically maintain the contact force in a bus bar connection have been demonstrated. Based on a BeUeviHe washer fabricated from a Cu—Al—Ni SMA trained to exhibit two-way memory, these washers, when heated by a hot joint, increase their force output and correct the condition. A 30 mm diameter washer 3 mm thick can produce a force of over 4000 N. Similar in purpose... [Pg.464]
