Scotland Yard

The Sherlock Holmes stories often are read as the triumph of the scientific method of deduction. There is, though, another, darker interpretation to be advanced. That is the frustration of science and technology in changing everyday social practice. Throughout the canon, Holmes is consistently thwarted by the standard operating procedures of the Scotland Yard "regulars." He also is annoyed—and even disturbed—by the inability of Victorian... 

The second main class of blood constituents used as genetic markers are the polymorphic enzymes. The enzymes of interest to the forensic serologist are primarily located within the red blood cell and are commonly referred to as isoenzymes. These can briefly be described as those enzymatically active proteins which catalyze the same biochemical reactions and occur in the same species but differ in certain of their physicochemical properties. (This description does not exclude the tissue isoenzymes that occur within the same organism however, our consideration deals only with those of the red blood cell in particular.) The occurrence of multi-molecular forms of the same enzyme (isoenzymes) has been known for several decades however, it was not until the Metropolitan Police Laboratory of Scotland Yard adapted electrophoretic techniques to dried blood analysis that these systems were catapulted to the prominence they presently receive (.2). For many of the forensic serologists in the United States, the use of electrophoresis and isoenzyme determination is a recently-inherited capability shared by only a few laboratories. 

Sir Ranulph Bacon, the former head of Scotland Yard who conducted the Royal Commission inquiry that cleaned out the Bay Street Boys for Lansky, cashed in his chips by moving on to the Intertel board. 

A 1917 thriller by Carl Moore appeared in Spicy-Adventure Stories and is just as ridiculous. Set in London, it has Scotland Yard detective surreptitiously getting a murder suspect to take some hashish. Overcome by the drug, the suspect loses consciousness, convulses, and subsequently reenacts the crime he has been arrested for (rape and murder). Convicted by the evidence, he is later hanged. 

If Markov s death had been intended to resemble an accident, the plan fell apart when he was able to tell his wife, shortly before he died, about the incident with the umbrella. When Scotland Yard forensic scientists examined the body, they discovered a small metal ball beneath the skin on Markov s thigh. No bigger than a pinhead, the tiny pellet had four holes bored through it. The analysts became convinced that the pellet had contained poison. But of what type ... 

The post-mortem investigation discovered a metallic sphere, 1.52 mm in diameter (about the size of a pin s head), just below the surface of the skin at the site of the puncture mark. The sphere, made of an alloy of platinum (90%) and iridium (10%), had two holes in it, of diameter 0.35 mm, that extended across the entire sphere. This would allow about 0.28mm of a substance to be stored. The pellet was checked by the Government Chemical Defense Establishment at Porton Down but no traces of any substance could be found. Despite this, owing to the symptomatology and the very high toxicity required for so small a dose, the Coroner was satisfied that the cause of the poisoning was ricin. The pellet found in Mr. Markov was placed in the Black Museum at New Scotland Yard but has since been removed to serve as a piece... 

This prevented investigators from establishing the type of substance that had been used, but it was sufficient to determine that Markov had not died of natural causes. BATS (British Anti-Terrorist Squad), detectives then joined the Scotland Yard investigating team. After weeks of research and experimentation, in January 1979, a Coroner s Inquest in London Gavin Thurston ruled that Georgi Markov had been killed via ricin toxin. Traces of ricin were possibly found later thereupon. 

In the apartment where the six original arrestees resided, the authorities found several castor oil beans and equipment that could be used to process those beans. The toxin has not been detected. Five other locales were subsequently searched in conjunction with this incident, and on 13 January, Scotland Yard officials arrested...
