Household textiles such as bed linens or towels can occur at a crime scene— for instance, a body bundle wrapped in a cotton-polyester duvet cover and deposited in a wood (see case study in Section 7.4.6.1). Biodegradation of the duvet cover will depend on a number of factors including the surface the bundle is placed on, the composition of the fabric, the degree of deterioration of fabric prior to deposition, and whether body decomposition products have access to the textile.

Another application for biodegradable plastics is for plastic films used in fresh food wrapping and plastic wrap used in the catering industry. The reason that a biodegradable film could be advantageous... 

In 2005, SPAR Austria started packaging organic apples, pears and tomatoes in rigid trays sealed with a flow wrap film made from NatureWorks PLA. Research showed that consumers perceive that nature-based packaging enhances the appeal of fresh food, and strongly prefer products packaged in biodegradable plastic containers. 

Coated or laminated paper products represent a significant potential market for biodegradable polymers. At present, packaging such as hamburger wrapping and disposable cups, are extrusion coated with low density polyethylene film that is resistant to biodegradation. This also restricts the biodegradation of the paper substrate since it acts as an impervious barrier. 

NatureFlex film is available for lidding in a heat sealable bag or wrap format. This material is certified compostable to the European OK Home Compost standard as well as to ASTM D6400 and by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI). 

There is a growing concern about fully biodegradable plastic — packing and wrapping foils, containers, equipment of fast-food restaurants, and superabsorbents.

The plastics you use may now be based on polylactic acid (PLA) from renewable corn rather than from nonrenewable petroleum sources (ASEE, 2002). PLA-based plastics will be used to manufacture everything from food wrap to car parts to clothing. Because the products are sugar-based, they are biodegradable. 

Chitin, a waste material from crab and shrimp processing, is poly(N-acetyl-D-glucosamine). The de-acetylated form, chitosan, is primarily used in water purification but is also used as a chemical feedstock. For example, chitosan can be depolymerized to the monomer, which is used as a hair-setting agent in shampoo and hair conditioner. In the future, graft polymers of chitosan may form biodegradable films. Already, carboxymethylated chitin is approved as a food wrap.
