The wound-induced synthesis and accumulation of proteinase Inhibitors I and II in tomato leaves has provided a model system to study the regulation of proteinase inhibitor genes in plants. The simplicity of the phenomenon has made it possible to Isolate the wound-factor, or hormone, and to study its release, direction and rate of transport in tomato plants. Messenger RNA has been isolated from leaves of wounded plants and contains translatable mRNAs for the two proteinase inhibitors. Studies with these mRNAs have provided a basis for the initiation of a program to clone inhibitor cDNAs for studies of the molecular basis of the wound-Induced process of inhibitor synthesis. [Pg.121]

RO membrane performance in the utility industry is a function of two major factors the membrane material and the configuration of the membrane module. Most utility applications use either spiral-wound or hollow-fiber elements. Hollow-fiber elements are particularly prone to fouling and, once fouled, are hard to clean. Thus, applications that employ these fibers require a great deal of pretreatment to remove all suspended and colloidal material in the feed stream. Spiral-wound modules (refer to Figure 50), due to their relative resistance to fouling, have a broader range of applications. A major advantage of the hollow-fiber modules, however, is the fact that they can pack 5000 ft of surface area in a 1 ft volume, while a spiral wound module can only contain 300 ftVff. [Pg.328]

Another factor is the ease with which various membrane materials can be fabricated into a particular module design.1618 Almost all membranes can be formed into plate-and-frame, spiral-wound and tubular modules, but many membrane materials cannot be fabricated into hollow fine fibres or capillary fibres.
