Teflon Fluorocarbon Resin, for instance was discovered in 1938. The substance was produced on a small scale throughout World War II for defense applications. It became commercially available in 1948, but did not gain public recognition until 1961 when it was used as a lining for nonstick frying pans. Today, Teflon coats chemical process equipment, insulates electrical equipment, coats the blades of tools, protects buildings from earthquakes and is used as a material in... [Pg.26]

Before the first World Trade Center bombing in 1993 and the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, emergency incidents were primarily or generally thought to be caused by natural or accidental events. Examples of natural phenomena (events) include wildfires, flash floods, earthquakes, active volcanoes, droughts, and storms. These natural events are not entirely predictable, and they cannot yet be controlled or prevented (Meyer 2004). [Pg.10]

The first seismograph is recorded to have been an inverted bronze urn with a pendulum inside and used by the Chinese in about 160 A.D. to announce earthquakes. Seismographs were reinverted, so to speak, during World War T to locate heavy German artillery. In 1920, scismography for use in petroleum exploration was first demonstrated. [Pg.1246]

However, there are problems. The main problem associated with a nuclear power station is that the reactor produces highly radioactive waste materials. These waste materials are difficult to store and cannot be disposed of very easily. Also, leaks of radioactive material have occurred at various sites throughout the world. Accidents at a small number of nuclear power stations, such as Three Mile Island in the US (1979) and Chernobyl in the Ukraine (1986) have led to a great deal of concern about their safety. More recently, in March 2011 a major nuclear accident happened at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in northern Japan. On this occasion the accident was not caused as a result of the plant itself undergoing a problem, but as a result of an earthquake near Japan that gave rise to a tsunami. This damaged essential... [Pg.104]

Geologists brave the awesome fury of volcanoes and earthquakes oceanographers plumb the hidden depths of the world. What do chemists do Well, they make paint, among other things. [Pg.102]

The sites in the New World from which these sherds have been excavated are among the earliest to be inhabited by the Spanish. In the Dominican Republic there are four Isabela, which was the first substantial settlement in the New World La Vega Vieja, which appears to have been founded as early as 1495 the Convento de San Francisco, the first of several religious houses to be constructed in the city of Santa Domingo (for which the church was completed in 1555 and the monastery in 1556) and Juandolio, which was an early 16th century site. In Venezuela the site of Nueva Cadiz was the earliest Spanish settlement. It was founded about 1515 and was abruptly destroyed by an earthquake in 1545 and subsequently deserted. The sherds from Mexico come from excavations within Mexico City. These include archaeological excavations at the Metropolitan Cathedral and commercial excavation for the Metro... [Pg.201]
