General thoughts

In contrast, benthic community structure and processes in the NEPAP region are likely to be both extremely sensitive to, and have very little resistance to, physical perturbations (e.g. mining disturbance). This is because the natural ecosystem is relatively very stable (compared to virtually all other ecosystems), most animals are small and/or very delicately constructed, and critical habitat structure for the entire benthic fauna is concentrated within a few centimeters of the sediment-water interface. Thus, it would require very little physical energy to disrupt the animals and the thin veneer of surface sediments that define this ecosystem. The extremely low sediment accumulation rates, biotur-bation rates, nodule growth rates and macrofaunal recolonization rates of the NEPAP seafloor ecosystem, compared to other seafloor habitats (Smith Demopoulos, 2003), suggest that recovery from physical disturbance is likely to be extremely slow relative to other ecosystems. [Pg.220]

Naturally occurring krypton contains six stable isotopes. Seventeen other unstable isotopes are now recognized. The spectral lines of krypton are easily produced and some are very sharp. While krypton is generally thought of as a rare gas that normally does not combine with other elements to form compounds, it now appears that the existence of some krypton compounds is established. Krypton difluoride has been prepared in gram quantities and can be made by several methods. A higher fluoride of krypton and a salt of an oxyacid of krypton also have been... [Pg.100]

Most chiral chromatographic separations are accompHshed using chromatographic stationary phases that incorporate a chiral selector. The chiral separation mechanisms are generally thought to involve the formation of transient diastereomeric complexes between the enantiomers and the stationary phase chiral ligand. Differences in the stabiHties of these complexes account for the differences in the retention observed for the two enantiomers. Often, the use of a... [Pg.61]

Although it is generally thought of as typical end-of-pipe treatment technology, the maimer in which it can be applied enables it to be used in pollution prevention applications. Figure 9 shows an installation in a steel mill operation. [Pg.419]

It would be well if engineering were less generally thought of, and even defined, as the art of constructing. In a certain important sense it is rather the art of not constructing or to define it rudely, but not ineptly, it is the art of doing well with one dollar, which any bungler can do with two after a fashion. [Pg.28]

Thus, a plot of IjN against t is a straight line (Figure 6.13) and is independent of the agitation rate. Perikinetie motion is generally thought to apply to partieles of less than ea. 1-10 pm, depending on the partiele-fluid motion. [Pg.170]

The reaction is generally thought to involve carbonium-ion intermediates but several puzzling features remain. Secondary aliphatic amines give nitrosamines without evolution of N2 ... [Pg.463]

Spin-orbit coupling is a relativistic effect that is well reported in tables of atomic energy levels, and this gives a guide. Relativistic effects are generally thought to he negligible for first-row elements. [Pg.273]

In overdose, ketamine may lead to hyperthermia, seizures, hypertensive crisis, coma, and even death. These symptoms are generally thought to be caused by ketamine s catecholaminergic effects (Reich and Silvay 1989). Ketamine is physically addicting, with a described withdrawal syndrome. [Pg.259]

The product of the hydroxylation of tryptophan, 5-hydroxytryptophan, is rapidly decarboxylated to 5-HT by a specific decarboxylase enzyme. This is generally thought to be a soluble enzyme which suggests that 5-HT is synthesised in the cytoplasm, before it is taken up into the storage vesicles. If this is the case, then considerable losses might be incurred from its metabolism by monoamine oxidase before it reaches the storage vesicles. Indeed, this could explain why 5-HT turnover seems to greatly exceed its rate of release. [Pg.193]
