Flash floods

If heavy rain causes a flash flood at the site of installation, the motor may be submerged in water for some time. A reasonably good motor, with good... [Pg.240]

Many important erosion-related phenomena are episodic and infrequent, such as flash floods, landslides, and glaciations, while others such as orogenesis and soil formation involve time scales that exceed those of major climate fluctuations. In either case, the time scale of human existence is too short to make adequate observations. Consequently, it is difficult to directly estimate the rates or characterize the effects of such phenomena on erosion products. The key to understanding weathering and erosion, on a continental scale, is to decipher the relationship between landforms, the processes that produce them, and the chemistry and discharge of river-borne materials. [Pg.206]

Before the first World Trade Center bombing in 1993 and the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, emergency incidents were primarily or generally thought to be caused by natural or accidental events. Examples of natural phenomena (events) include wildfires, flash floods, earthquakes, active volcanoes, droughts, and storms. These natural events are not entirely predictable, and they cannot yet be controlled or prevented (Meyer 2004). [Pg.10]

However, if there is a sudden drop in cooling water temperature (as can occur during a thunder shower or blue norther ), the pressure in the column can fall rapidly. This can cause flashing of the liquid on the trays, will upset the composition and level controls on the column, and could even cause the column to flood. [Pg.264]

Particle trapping is also a substantial economic issue, as in many countries the sUtation time scale is relatively short (about 100 yr on a global scale). In alpine reservoirs this time scale is much longer, and measures to mitigate siltation had low priority. However, in the future, sediment management, including removal, will be unavoidable. An occasionally used method is to divert the early arrival of a turbid flash flood past the reservoir, so that most of the sediment is delivered to the downstream river. Also, sediment removal and downstream re-deposition is periodically applied, especially when the downstream river suffers from erosion. [Pg.245]
