Using digital cameras is also a type of photographic documentation. Nearly all advice for practical use given in Section 8.3 apply here too. However digital cameras need a computer-controlled system, and likewise when working with video cameras. Therefore most of the advice given in Section 8.4 also applies here.

Even therapists who have studied all that there is to study on motivational interviewing, have made several video tapes on the subject, and are invited to do workshops on the topic, are by no means infallible. For our own benefit, and we hope for the benefit of other therapists, we have studied our own shortcomings. The following pitfalls are the most dangerous ravines to stumble into as a therapist working with the motivational problem of addicts. 

The preparation for physical chemistry laboratory is a little harder to judge. Today s students seem less experienced in working with their hands than students of a few decades ago, except in the area of video games. I have used an initial experiment in which the students were required to carry out three simple measurements after assembling simple apparatuses, a technique that I learned from Ed Bair at Indiana University. Close observation of the students as they carry out such an experiment gives some information about their aptitude. This experiment also provided the opportunity to discuss data reduction, error analysis and report writing at the beginning of the course. 

Other hardware—sound cards, network cards, modems, video cards, and so on—may or may not work with Windows 95 or Windows 98. If the device is fairly recent, you can be relatively certain that it was built to work with Windows 9x, but if it is older, you may need to find out who made the hardware and check their Web site to see if they have Windows 9x drivers. If they don t, you can also use DOS 16-bit real-mode drivers, but this should be done only as a last resort because they are more difficult to configure and are less effective than Windows 9x 32-bit drivers. We will talk more about this distinction in the discussion of the hardware detection phase of setup later in this chapter, and in the chapters on multimedia (Chapter 15) and networking (Chapter 18) later on. 

Both allergic and irritant mechanisms have been proposed as explanations for eye symptoms. More rapid tear-film break-up time, a measure of tear film instability, is associated with increased levels of symptoms. Fat-foam thickness measurement and photography for documentation of ocular erythema have also been used. Some authors attribute eye symptoms at least in part to increased individual susceptibility based on those factors. In addition, office workers with ocular symptoms have been demonstrated to blink less frequently when working at video display terminals. Conjunctival staining with fluorescent dyes is a common clinical test for conjunctivitis sicca. 

Environmental criteria have been established for many of these, but the utility and applicability of such criteria for indoor environments is controversial for at least four reasons. Eor example, the goals of the threshold limit values often do not include preventing irritation, a primary concern in indoor environments with requirements for close eye work at video display terminals. For most of the pollutant categories, the problem of interactions, commonly termed the multiple contaminants problem , remains inadequately defined. Even for agents that are thought to affect the same receptor, such as aldehydes, alcohols, and ketones, no prediction models are well established. Finally, the definition of representative compounds for measurement is unclear. That is, pollutants must be measurable, but complex mixtures vary in their composition. It is unclear whether the chronic residual odor annoyance from environmental tobacco smoke correlates better with nicotine, particulates, carbon monoxide, or other pollutants. The measure total volatile organic compounds is meanwhile... 

To be specific, the fact that the writer can use digital video—an inexpensive recording format—to work with actors and to try out scenes, implies that such work, whether improvisational or scripted, can enhance the actual script. In other words, the writing process can embrace what may have been a discreet part of the pre-production process—casting, rehearsal—and a more liberal attitude to what will constitute a scene or sequence as it eventually appears in the final form of the short film. 

While on the subject of pleomorphism and the hke, there is a video out titled The Rise and Fall of a Scientific Genius, about the career and findings of the much-cited Royal Rife, written and directed by Shawn Montgomery. A review was furnished in the January 2004 issue of the Townsend Letter for Doctors Patients, and another in the November 2005 issue. Mentioned is the fact that in the early part of the twentieth century, Rife s work was respected by eminent medical researchers and physicists and was financially supported by Henry Timken, Jr., of the Timken Roller Bearing Company. (A device invented by Rife had saved the company millions of dollars.) A laboratory was provided by Timken in San Diego, and Rife received the cooperation of a Dr. Milbank Johnson, head of the local medical society, who was affiliated with the University of Southern California. Two prominent bacteriologists also worked with Rife Dr. E. C. Rosenow of the Mayo Clinic and Dr. Arthur Kendall of Northwestern University. 

Working with the CAD system was analyzed with psychophysiological measures, as well as activity-related and performance measurements. During the experiments, the most common and valid measurements, heart rate, respiration rate, and heart rate variability were measured (online) to evaluate stress and strain. Every experiment was videotaped to identify stress factors directly after the experiments. One major result of the first two studies was the lack of interpretation of strain reactions. Because the possible stressor can result from many different sources (task, design activities, CAD system, disturbances, etc.), an interpretation of the stressor related to a psychophysiological strain reaction is nearly impossible without the help of the subject. Therefore, a new method was developed called strain induced video- self confrontation.
