Writing process

The writing process, that is, the transition crystalline — amorphous, is caused by briefly (<50 100 ns) heating up the selected storage area (diameter (( )) ca 0.5—1 Hm) by a laser pulse to a temperature above the melting point of the memory layer (Eig. 15, Record), such that the film locally melts. When cooled faster than a critical quench rate (10 -10 ° K/s), the formation of crystalline nuclei is suppressed and the melted area sohdifies into the amorphous (glass-like) state. 

Reversible Rubble Generation. In a two-layered pigmented polymeric layer system with ceramic coating, a bubble forms beneath the ceramic coating when heated locally (write process). For erasure, the bubble is closed again by heating the polymer close to its melting poiat (119). This development is also hampered by extensive erase times (>5 ms). 

If a dye is used which changes its properties by illumination, eg, its shape like the a2oben2ene, the phase change temperature can be lowered. The writing process then is nearly isothermal which helps to reduce spot diameters. 

First, the recording layer which contains photochromic spirobenzothiopyran in liquid-crystal polymer or polymer such as vinyl chloride-vinylidene chloride copolymer, is made colored by UV irradiation. In the recording (writing) process, a colorless recording dot in the recording layer is formed by semiconductor laser beams (789 nm, 15-20 mW).100 This process is essentially thermal decoloration of the photomerocyanine form by laser beam.
