Working rules

A safe laboratory is the result of both good design and proper work rules. The laboratory operator, as the only person fully aware of the work to be performed, must be involved in all safety planning. He will be the one who can supply the safety experts with the information they need. [Pg.36]

Laboratories working frequently with flammables, such as in extraction processes, may set aside a separate room for such work for maximum safety. Ideally, this room should have explosion-proof electrical equipment and special ventilation. Rigid work rules should be enforced, such as requiring workers to leave matches and lighters on a shelf outside before entering. Installation of conductive flooring should be considered, and steel tools should be prohibited at times when work is in progress. [Pg.44]

You may wish to refer to other documents, eg works rules, safety checklists, training programmes, emergency instructions, etc. [Pg.2]

Another factor which may sway a court, particularly since the Sindermann case, is whether the "common law of the job indicates a right of employment security. In other words, is there a handbook of work rules, an implied promise, or an oral statement or memo to the worker, or anything else supplemental to the contract which creates an enforceable right of job security for the employee ... [Pg.80]

As a working rule of thumb, WSL has used values of R 10 and S 5 as broadly adequate, accepting that the prediction of short term peaks is necessarily inaccurate, and that some central estimate of practical use is required. A discussion of short period turbulent fluctuations has been given by Hanna (5). [Pg.251]

Inductive Learning (RuleMaker). Experts are best able to explain complex concepts to human apprentices implicitly by using examples of the expert s decision-making, rather than by explicitly stating fundamental theoretical principles. The apprentice quickly generalizes these example decisions to form working rules, which he applies when similar situations are encountered. [Pg.20]

A few empirical and theoretical studies to postulate a general set of rules for the fabrication of asymmetric membranes by phase inversion mechanism (in which the polymer solution is coagulated within a nonsolvent bath) have been attempted. Thus, for example, from the literature which described the formation of asymmetric membranes, Klein and Smith (5) compiled working rules in the early 1970s regarding the requirements of a casting solution ... [Pg.267]

It should be noted that Wachter (62) has stated that the generalizations and working rules which he presents are supported by the evidence on the structure of the polymers and that they are put forward as working hypotheses of polymerization and not as a description of the actual mechanism. Their chief use is to aid in predicting the structure of the polymerization products. [Pg.60]

Given that standards can and must be adopted, then the future of control may not lie in an extension of the present detailed regulatory requirements. Rather, there could be a move towards providing a simpler, more flexible framework for the control of the risks at local level, always providing that the local working rules adopted are acceptable to those who may be affected, coupled with an overriding requirement that the mandatory exposure standard must be met. [Pg.18]

Column selection often has to do with which area of a molecule contains the differentiating portion. Two compounds to be separated may vary by substitution on a benzene ring. Another pair may only vary by a polar functional group. Again, like attracts like. The working rule is to select a column in which the variable parts of two molecules point toward the column. [Pg.94]

Because the temperature variation of 5 is to be compared with the strong exponential variation of e EIRT it is difficult to separate from experimental data the temperature dependence of 5 and E. For this reason it is a convenient working rule to assume that 5 is a constant. The activation energy E is then given by the slope of the line obtained by plotting 2.303 R log k against 1/T, as shown in Fig. 5. In most cases little error will be introduced by this simplification. [Pg.220]

Plant safety rules are incorporated in the plant work rules... [Pg.184]

In addition, plant work rules are firmly enforced and updated at least annually... [Pg.184]

For many organizations, orientation is a short, mechanical process that involves signing the employment agreement, safety indoctrination, and a review of the work rules and practices of the site and new employee s department. These are necessary functions but, if there is nothing more to orientation, the new employee may feel disappointed. When done right, orientation programs will address a variety of needs for the new employee and the organization. They help to... [Pg.129]

In practice this means that for an atom in any environment of symmetry lower than spherical, an absolute direction exists and fixes the direction of z. As a working rule it follows that only one of the three degenerate p-states (pz) can be specified in real form. Other p-states in the system cannot be located more closely than to a plane perpendicular to z, with orbital angular momentum quantum numbers m = 1. Non-zero implies circulating charge and non-zero kinetic energy. [Pg.84]

Industrial workers should be trained regularly to observe and practice elementary work rules to achieve proper management of industrial solvents in workplaces for the following reasons ... [Pg.42]

We can increase either the coefficient or the exponential part of a number by any factor withont changing the number s overall value if we reduce the other part by the same factor. A simple working rule allows changing the format of a number in exponential notation Move the decimal point in the coefficient... [Pg.47]

The potential advantage of using non-union labor is in the lower percentage of time lost because of stringent union work rules. However, this advantage can easily be offset by lower productivity resulting from poor training of the non-union labor pool. [Pg.333]

R. M. Barrer Outgassing times depend upon the openness of the crystals, the cations present, and the size of the crystals. As a practical working rule for water removal, a final temperature of not less than 360°C maintained under the best vacuum for not less than 24 hours is desirable. [Pg.35]

Details of changes to original formulations made as minor formulation modifications were documented in great detail. Now all users of the code had a consistent set of working rules. [Pg.512]
