In most cases there may be only a few days of exposure a year but in some there may be more frequent exposure over the entire year. One approach that has been taken to obtain a lifetime dally exposure under these circumstances has been to conduct a worker field study and measure the exposure received for one day. This is multiplied by the number of days worked in a year and then by the number of working years. This is an Amortized Daily Exposure. [Pg.440]

Scriven (1967) first distinguished between the formative and summative roles of evaluation. Formative evaluations, conducted during the implementation of a safety program, provide directors information that helps improve the program. Formative evaluation typically involves content inspection by experts, pilot tests with small numbers of workers, field tests with larger numbers of workers in several plants, and so forth. Each step results in immediate feedback to the developers, who would then use the information to make necessary revisions (Worthen and Sanders 1987,34). [Pg.126]

Rowell and co-workers [62-64] have developed an electrophoretic fingerprint to uniquely characterize the properties of charged colloidal particles. They present contour diagrams of the electrophoretic mobility as a function of the suspension pH and specific conductance, pX. A more sophisticated electroacoustic measurement provides the particle size distribution and potential in a polydisperse suspension. Not limited to dilute suspensions, in this experiment, one characterizes the sonic waves generated by the motion of particles in an alternating electric field. It is important to evaluate the surface distortion associated with the assymetric field at the surface, a difficult task often simplified by assuming that distortion is limited to the direction normal to the plane [64, 6S]. Benson and co-workers [6S] calculated displacements for the first five planes in the (100) face of sodium chloride and found the distortion correction to of about 100 ergs/cm or about half of itself The displacements show a tendency toward ion pair formation, suggesting that lateral displacements to produce ion doublets should be considered [66] however, other calculations yielded much smaller displacements [67]. [Pg.268]

A catalyst may play an active role in a different sense. There are interesting temporal oscillations in the rate of the Pt-catalyzed oxidation of CO.
