Distorted surface

The scattering from a distorted surface region is no longer governed by the dynamical scattering in the bulk of the crystal. In the bulk, due to multiple scattering processes, the refractive index is not quite unity and the result is that... [Pg.162]

The outer distorted surface II corresponds to a molecule that has much greater internal energy but less than the critical energy. The diagonal arrows indicate the directions along which dissociation into an atom and a diatomic molecule would take place. [Pg.215]

The acidity of bulk and supported Nb205 was probed by absorption of py. Raman and IR spectroscopy of the adsorbed pyridine indicated that highly distorted surface NbOfi octahedral sites corresponded to Lewis acid sites (the Raman band between 850 and 1,000 cm-1) and that slightly distorted surface Nb06 sites, as well as NbCF and NbOg sites, corresponded to Bronsted acid centers (Raman bands between 500 and 700 cm-1).690,691 The acidic character of hydrated niobia (niobic acid Nb205 H20) depended on calcination temperature. Niobic acid calcined at moderate temperatures of 373-573 K showed acidic character but it became almost neutral when calcined at 873 K.692 The presence or absence of water determines Lewis or Bronsted acidity of a given metal site (Scheme 50).693... [Pg.299]

The unprecedented spatial resolution of the Atomic Force Microscope makes it possible to examine the plastic deformation of shocked or impacted solids at the atomic or molecular levels. At these levels the molecular and lattice behaviors are determined by quantum mechanics. While the AFM is limited to imaging only the surface of the deformed solid, in many if not most shocked or impacted solids the deformation extends throughout the sample. It is necessary to infer the deformation in the interior of the sample from the surface information. In the case of severe deformation as found in shear bands the assumption has been made that the severely distorted surface features extend throughout the similar severely distorted regions in the interior of the solid. This assumption yields reasonable results not accessible by a classical analysis. [Pg.120]

The structure factor in Equation (14) can be rewritten in a form that allows for substantial conceptual simplification. Any mineral-fluid interface consists of three parts, the semi-infinite bulk crystal structure that is known in principle a priori, the distorted surface region (whose depth is not known a priori) and the fluid layer above the surface. The total structure factor, Ftot, can be written as follows ... [Pg.166]

In order to study potential energy surfaces it is necessary to use theoretical approaches for the solution of the Schrodinger equation which give a balanced description for all states involved at various nuclear conformations, in particular for geometries in the neighborhood of the equilibrium as well as close to the dissociation limits. It is clear that only methods that account for correlation are at all acceptable for this purpose the SCF solution would lead to an unrealistic ordering of states and distorted surfaces. Presently, all such methods applicable to larger systems are based on expansion techniques. [Pg.16]

If the surface tension is small, the distorted surface experiences a small restoring force, and owing to the viscosities r of the upper phase and f) of the lower phase, the interfacial motion is strongly overdamped. Hence,... [Pg.163]

Many phenomena related to the interface and the boundary between the phases which affect the process of reaction is constrained by the following status, that is, the existence of the surface energy leads to pressure differences in the environment above the distortion surface. At this point, the pressure of vapor increases on large curvature ... [Pg.383]

Figure 3.23 The two possible local distortions of the surface of a nematic with conical anchoring. The curved lines represent the alignment of the director and Ob is the boundary condition for 9 at the surface, V being the fixed conical anchoring angle. The displacement of the surface from its original z = 0 flat orientation is denoted hy ( x). The small angle the distorted surface makes locally with the a -axis is denoted by c, greatly exaggerated here for illustration.
