Perhaps, even more important, is the stagnation in our safety and environmental performance in the last five years. Until five years ago, we had seen dramatic year on year improvement in every aspect of safety and environmental performance. This has slowed down in all areas and ceased altogether in occupational safety. I expect that these changes will invigorate all our programs. Our current safety and environmental performance costs us at least 30 million each year in avoidable costs such as capital damage and clean-up costs. If we could put a dollar value on injuries to our work-force, the savings would likely be ten times this amount. [Pg.42]

A large portion of the cost of any manufactured item is represented by labor. Although labor rates are more and more becoming similar in most parts of the country, factors such as skill, labor relations, and the general welfare of the work force affect labor productivity and efficiency. Each region being considered for plant location must be suiveyed to determine the availability and the skills of the labor market. The skills need not exactly match with those... [Pg.168]

For one thing, those saved from heart attacks will ordinarily remain under medical treatment, at high cost, for the rest of their lives treatment in the aftermath of heart attacks is expensive and life-long. For another, many of those who have suffered heart attacks will not return to the work force, brought down by chronic heart disease. For still another, by an aggregate mode of accounting... the true cost of saving the life of someone from a heart attack must also calculate the costs of whatever other illnesses they [sic] incur over the remainder of their lifetime, which would not have happened if they had died from the attack... [Pg.175]

Additions and deletions must be handled by adjusting the number of work hours. In the case of additional work this can be done either with overtime or increasing the work force. If it becomes apparent that these measures cannot keep the project on the right track at a reasonable cost (within the contingency allowance) it is time to bite the bullet and inform management of the schedule delay and the cost impact and risks of trying to maintain schedule at all costs. [Pg.396]

The work force should have labour having more skills— who can carry out all the steps of a batch—which is necessary because the complete product is made in a batch, as compared to a continuous production line having many work stations—wherein only a limited type of work is generally done at each of them. Batch production can be kept stopped as per convenience and hence work force need not be engaged in all shifts. This can save considerable costs as relievers are not required on weekly off days. [Pg.314]

A critical performance measurement is made by investors (and the share market). Failure to provide a satisfactory return on investment (ROI) will lead to a drop in share price, higher funding rates and close scrutiny by investors. When an organization is under pressure to reassure the investors, and the share market, pressure will be applied to cut back on costs and to shed people. An example is Ford Motors who announced following a very poor financial result, that in 2008 it will close a further 16 factories and that up to 30,000 people will be redundant. Some reports suggest that redundancy in 2007/2008 will be as high as 75,000. Notwithstanding redundancy of 30,0(X) is 10 per cent of Ford s worldwide work force of 300,0(X). Previously, in 2(X)2, Ford made 35,(XK) redundant and closed 10 factories. [Pg.339]

When the accounting model was applied, the costs were even lower. For temporary disabilities of up to 10 days of absence, they varied between 10 and 350 euro. For accidents resulting in more than 10 days of absence, the company actually experienced economic benefits of up to 3400 euro. This is because the company could produce at normal level with a reduced work force, while the insurer paid the wage costs for the victim. [Pg.63]

Several factors motivated Nortel to produce the lead-free telephone, including public concern over the effect of lead on the human body and the defeated U.S. Lead Exposure Reduction Act in 1994. In addition, efforts in Europe to ban lead-containing electronics waste initiated by the Netherlands served as a driving force to develop the telephone [23]. Other contributing factors to Nortel s lead-free work included cost issues lead-free products would incur lower handling and disposal costs, and product end-of-life liability and disposal costs would be avoided. [Pg.164]
