In 1906 Pierre was awarded a full professorship and position as chair of physics at the Sorbonne and Marie was promised a position as director of the laboratory which the university planned to create for Pierre. However, in April 1906 Pierre was killed when he stepped into the path of a horse-drawn cart. While this event personally devastated Marie, it was a pivotal point in her professional career. She was offered Pierre s chaired position at the level of assistant professor, making her the first woman in France to obtain a professorship and allowing her to both continue her research and financially support her family. [Pg.317]

The variant was found In a 22 year old woman with chronic hemolytic anemia characterized by a persistent retlculocytosls, development of gallstones requiring cholecystectomy, frequent episodes of jaundice, dark urine, and falling PCV value. Her mother, maternal grandfather, and sister have a similar clinical picture In all patients red cell enzymes are elevated with a retlculocytosls of about 10%, and 2,3-DPG levels are normal ... [Pg.41]

Dermal Effects. Some of the people in Woburn, Massachusetts, who had been chronically exposed to trace amounts of trichloroethylene and other substances in the drinking water reported skin lesions (Byers et al. 1988). These were maculopapular rashes that were said to occur approximately twice yearly and lasted 2-4 weeks. These skin conditions generally ceased 1-2 years after cessation of exposure to contaminated water. The limitations of this study are discussed in Section 2.2.2.8. A case study was published of a 63-year-old rural South Carolina woman exposed to trichloroethylene and other chlorinated hydrocarbons in her well water, who developed diffuse fascitis, although her husband did not (Waller et al. 1994). The level of trichloroethylene measured in the well water was 19 mg/L. Substitution of bottled water for drinking resulted in improved symptoms. [Pg.91]

This model accurately predicted the time curves for blood concentration and urinary excretion of metabolites by male volunteers exposed to 100 ppm trichloroethylene (Sato et al. 1991). It was found that, while the amount of metabolite excretion increases with body weight, the concentration does not, because of a corresponding increase in urinary volume. Also, women and obese people, compared with slim men, have lower concentrations but longer residence times of blood trichloroethylene because of their higher fat content (Sato et al. 1991). As a consequence, the model predicted that 16 hours after exposure to trichloroethylene, one could expect a woman s blood level to be 30% higher and an obese man s level to be twofold higher than that of a slim man (Sato 1993). [Pg.129]

Any woman diagnosed with GDM should be retested at 6 weeks postpartum. If the fasting plasma glucose (FPG) level is normal, then reassessment for DM should occur every 3 years. Family planning for subsequent pregnancies should be discussed, and monitoring for the development of symptoms of DM should be undertaken. [Pg.648]

Serum cancer antigen 125 (CA-125) is the most extensively evaluated tumor marker for ovarian cancer. Unfortunately, the CA-125 determination is non-specific, and elevated levels can be associated with a number of other gynecologic and gastrointestinal diseases. CA-125 levels in a woman without ovarian cancer, though, are static or tend to decrease over time, whereas levels associated with malignancy will continue to rise.10 Since CA-125 is a non-specific marker, there is no standard recommendation for routine screening for prevention of ovarian cancer. [Pg.1386]

As for Frances Gelvin, he finally decided that marriage with such a temperamental woman would have been one continual civil war.. . . Fran has several qualities that I detest and I have several which she detests with equal or better grounds. The war might have been interesting and life would never probably have sunk to the level of common boredom, but I have a feeling that things would have ended up in a big crash one way or another. ... [Pg.110]

Women with secondary amenorrhea (i.e., cessation of menses in a woman who was previously menstruating for 6 months or more) who have been estrogen deficient for 12 months or longer should also receive low-dose estrogen initially, but the dose can be increased up to maintenance levels... [Pg.364]

In those with serum estradiol concentrations of 5-10 pmol/L, invasive breast cancer incidence was reduced by 67% (HR = 0.33, 95% Cl = 0.13-0.84 ARR = 40 cases per 10,000 woman-years) in the raloxifene group compared to those receiving placebo. In women with serum estradiol levels < 5 pmol/L, the 48% reduction in invasive breast cancer incidence for the raloxifene group compared to placebo was not significant (HR = 0.52, 95% Cl = 0.26-1.06 ARR =11 cases per 10,000 woman-years). However, the interaction test showed that the magnitude of reduction in breast cancer incidence with raloxifene was independent of estradiol level (interaction p = 0.317). [Pg.268]

Smith (1984) suggested that sperm competition would occur whenever a woman had sex with two different men within 7—9 days, this being the maximum active life of human sperm once inside the cervix. He was probably correct (Baker and Beilis 1995), but to be conservative, I have in the past used a 5-day criterion, using the fertile rather than the active life of sperm (Baker and Beilis 1995). Other authors (e.g. Gomendio and Roldan 1993) would prefer to be even more conservative and use a criterion of only 2-3 days but, as shown previously (Baker and Beilis 1995), even this actually makes very little difference to estimates of the level of sperm competition. If a woman is going to have sex with two different men within the space of 7 days, she almost always does so within 2-3 days, perhaps precisely so as to promote the most active sperm competition (Beilis and Baker 1990). Estimates for the UK suggest that about 4% of children are the result of sperm competition, each being conceived while their mother contains sperm in her reproductive tract from two or more different men (Baker and Beilis 1995). [Pg.164]

A 64-year-old woman is seen by a hematologist for evaluation of a macrocytic anemia. The woman was severely malnourished. Both homocysteine and methylmalonate were elevated in her blood and urine, and the transketolase level in her erythrocytes was below normal. [Pg.261]

Puma, a sport-lifestyle brand, committed to eliminating the OSPAR+ chemicals from both its sports shoes and perfumes with immediate effect, across their whole product range. Results of perfume testing commissioned by Greenpeace revealed that Puma s Jamaica Man and Puma Woman had some of the lowest levels of nitromusks and polycyclic musks of all of the samples analysed. ... [Pg.23]

In pregnancy, there is a sharp increase in the plasma fatty acid level after about 12 hours of fasting, much sooner than in the non-pregnant woman. This may be important in maintaining the plasma glucose level not only for the mother but also the foetus. This maintenance is achieved via the glucose fatty acid cycle (Chapter 16). [Pg.132]
