Wire rope sling

High-alloy or heat-treated vessels (since it would not be advisable for the field to be doing welding on these vessels after they arrive on site, and wire rope slings could contaminate the vessel material)...

Parts Holder Synthetic Web Sling. Use of synthetic web slings in areas where fiimes or vapors are present is a violation of OSHA 29 CFR 1910.184(i)(6). Constant exposure to solvent vapors could result in premature failure of synthetic web sling. Recommend use of wire rope sling instead.

Wire rope slings also require regular inspection because the first signs of failure often are not readily noticeable. A rope failure could result in a crippling ii jury or even death. 

Ensure that slingers understand that doubling up the sling does NOT double up the Safe Working Load avoid this practice if possible. Limit the use of endless wire rope slings. 

Ensure that wire rope slings are protected from sharp corners of the loads, by suitable packings.

Synthetic slings are protected from Abrasive, sharp or acute edges, and configurations that could cause a reduction of the sling s rated capacity, such as distortion or localized compression. Note Requirements for the protection of wire rope slings are contained in 29 CFR 1926.251(c)(9). 

Eyes in wire rope slings must be fabricated with thimbles. 

Bridle wire rope sling— A wire rope formed by plaiting component wire ropes. 

Cable laid endless sling-mechanical joint— A wire rope sling made endless by joining the ends of a single length of cable laid rope with one or more metallic fittings. 

Cable laid grommet-hand tucked—An endless wire rope sling made from one length of rope wrapped six times around a core formed by hand tucking the ends of the rope inside the six wraps. 

Cable laid rope sling-mechanical joint—A wire rope sling made from a cable laid rope with eyes fabricated by pressing or swagging one or more metal sleeves over the rope junction. 

Master link or gathering ring— A forged or welded steel link used to support all members (legs) of an alloy steel chain sling or wire rope sling. 

Wire rope slings must be used only with loads that do not exceed the rated capacities. 

Fiber core wire rope slings of all grades must be permanently removed from service if they are exposed to temperatures in excess of200°F. 

Describe the defects that might be identified in a wire rope sling during routine inspection prior to use. 

Ensure that all wire rope slings are inspected by a competent person for damage each day before use and additionally as conditions warrant. Damaged or defective slings must be immediately removed from service. See 29 CFR 1910.184(d). 

Remove wire rope slings from service if they show kinking, crushing, bird caging or other damage resulting in distortion. See OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.184(f)(5)(iii).
