Alloys containing only a few per cent of zinc may fail if the stresses are high and the environment sufficiently corrosive. Most types of brass, besides the plain copper/zinc alloys, appear to be susceptible to stress corrosion. An extensive investigation of the effect of additions to 70/30 brass was carried out by Wilson, Edmunds, Anderson and Peirce , who found that about 1% Si was markedly beneficial. Other additions were beneficial under some circumstances and none of the 36 additions tested accelerated stress-corrosion cracking. Further results are given in later papers ...

It begins with Robert Maguire s general overview of Gogol s criticism includes two nineteenth-century Russian appraisals continues with Donald Fan-ger s brilliant essay and a broad spectrum of twentieth-century Russian critical opinion and features, as well, essays by Vladimir Nabokov and Edmund Wilson. The Russian essays have been especially translated for this Norton Critical Edition. 

The selection of Western criticism aims at making available examples of the best of comments and analyses, as well as presenting a cross section of the different approaches taken to Dead Souls. Some are by well-known critics and writers (Vladimir Nabokov, Edmund Wilson) others, by specialists and scholars.
