Critical section

A semaphore forces the serialization of multiple processes around a critical section, a part of a program that must be executed by only one process at a... [Pg.94]

The critical section of the circuit (Figure 5.3) is where there is no liquid refrigerant left to help move the oil, i.e. the evaporator outlet and the suction pipe back to the compressor. Entrainment velocities of 5-7 m/ s are required to ensure that oil droplets will be carried back by the dry refrigerant gas to the compressor. The principle of continuous fluid velocity means that the evaporator will be in a continuous circuit. This does not imply that it has to be one pipe, since many pipes may be arranged in parallel to get the required heat transfer surface, providing the minimum velocity criteria are met. [Pg.61]

Figure 15. Left-. Geometry of the surface 6 = 0 in Eq. (46) with fixed total angular momenta S and N. Properties of the special points A, B, C, and D are listed in Table I. All other permissible classical phase points lie on or inside the surface of the rounded tetrahedron. Right. Critical section at J. Continuous lines are energy contours for y = 0.5 and N/S = 4. Dashed lines are tangents to the section at D. Axes correspond to normalized coordinates, /NS and K JiN + S). Taken from Ref. [2] with permission of Elsevier. Figure 15. Left-. The submission project plan should identify the critical path of the application and the major milestones influencing the timeline. An index should be prepared identifying the critical sections and associated documents and the targeted availability of the documents for inclusion in the application. Systems should be in place for the controlled physical assembly of the application, including appropriate procedures for assembling the application and performing adequate quality control. Checklists are very helpful in ensuring that all necessary elements are included. [Pg.7]

This critical section should include individual patient data in a tabulated form. Demographic values (age, sex, race, etc.), patient inclusion and exclusion criteria, relevant clinical measures for the particular study must also be included. Special clinical and laboratory measures used for the study must have a rationale for these tests as well as an explanation for the significance of the results. All concomitant medications used during the clinical trial must be listed for each patient admitted into the study. Other clinical observations of less relevance should be addressed. [Pg.134]

A number of combinations of the valnes of the elements of VJAJ + K[AJ can occur before the solids reach the critical section of the thickener. This combination corresponds to the different speeds of the cars however, upon reaching the section, yjAJ + Vu[X,] slows down to a crawl, that is, slows down to a one particular value of K[A ]. This crawf value of VJAJ + would have to be the smallest of all the possible values it can have before reaching the section this value would also necessarily correspond to the rate of withdrawal at the bottom of the tank. This is the limiting flnx G,(, mentioned previously. Thus,... [Pg.292]

Critical section—Also called terminal section, this is the location in a thickener where the limiting flux is transpiring. [Pg.299]

The velocity at which this takes place will decrease as the viscosity increases. In a margarine process the most critical section is in the final scraped-surface heat exchanger (SSHE) and then toward the exit end. Here there is the greatest viscosity (highest Pr) and also the smallest temperature difference between the wall and the material (A0). [Pg.2884]

The vertical shear, resulting from the upward reaction of the soil, produces diagonal tension stresses in the foundation. The critical section lies at a dis-... [Pg.354]

Perhaps the most critical section of the chapter. You must learn how to draw correct Lewis structures of molecules. [Pg.530]

In Table 16.5 are listed values of p, it, p, T, and s in the immediate vicinity of the critical section at pi = 12 MPa. For comparison with the case of taking into account coagulation and phase transitions, numerical trio and volume concentrations of drops nil determined from the found values of the gas-dynamic parameters are also shovwi in this table. [Pg.528]

What would be the consequences of overlooking the critical section where datum is accumulated in the example from Figure 4.2 If compute a were a function that usually ran faster than compute b, the outcome, in most cases, would be that of Case 1 of Table 4.1, which is the correct answer. Thus, a problem of this type could go undetected, even though the program is... [Pg.62]

The accumulation of x [ i ] x [ i ] into r in the above example is a critical section (see section 4.1) because r is shared among all threads. The (almost) associative and commutative properties of the addition and other permitted operators allow the reduction operator to provide better performance fhan would be possible by obtaining a mutual exclusion lock for each accumulation into r. [Pg.199]

If a non-thread-safe function is called inside of a for loop, it is necessary to ensure that the function call is made by only one thread at a time. Such a critical section can be protected by a critical directive, which serializes the execution of the program block following it. In the following example, the progress of each thread is reported using printf... [Pg.201]

The MTR shield is being built of barytes concrete in "which the gravel part of the mix is approximately 93% BaSO, It was at first thought that only certain critical sections of the shield would be made of. barytes, but, owing to difficulty of mixed pours, it was decided that a more satisfactory shield would be obtained if barytes was used throughout.. In order to simplify the cons.truction procedure and obtain a uniformly dense concrete, it is now planned to use the Prepack method for setting all the biological shield. [Pg.80]
