Fluoride-liberating chemicals are used in some automobile wheel cleaners, glass etching solutions, insecticides, rodenticides, aluminum production, vitamins or dietary supplements, and products to prevent dental caries. Most toothpaste contains up to 5 mg fluoride per teaspoon. Fluoride is commonly added to community drinking water. It is also found in hydrofluoric acid (see p 221), which is used for etching glass and cleaning silicon chip products. Soluble fluoride salts are rapidly absorbed and are more acutely toxic (Table 11-25).

However, when one describes the adhesion of a tire to a road surface or of a railway wheel to a steel rail, as in Fig. 2.2(b), this means something entirely different. In fact, there is no significant adhesion force in this case as one tries to lift the wheel from the track. Instead, the writer is referring to the force required to make the wheel skid along the surface. This phenomenon should be called friction and not adhesion. If the railway was built on the surface of the Moon, however, there could well be significant adhesion then between wheel and rail because the surfaces are much cleaner, giving improved contact. Friction would then also increase. 

One purpose could be to change the feel or heft of a product such as a steering wheel or a vacuum cleaner handle. That permits the handle to be made in one piece instead of the older method which consisted of two injection-molded halves usually assembled with screws and nuts. These foam molding processes eliminate the need for assembly and the cost of the fasteners. This results in a lower product cost even though the injection molding process has a faster molding cycle.
